About Shropshire
I finally made it to Buzzard Lodge after a bit of a faff on the drive down from the Midlands. We'd packed the car to the gills with kids' wellies, a cool bag of picnic bits, and enough board games to last a nuclear winter. Shropshire's rolling hills were looking proper lush that Friday afternoon in early autumn, all golden light and sheep-dotted fields. But about five miles out from Oswestry, disaster struck: I took a wrong turn onto some narrow B-road, and the sat-nav decided to throw a hissy fit. "Recalculating," it chirped endlessly while we crawled behind a tractor belching diesel. The kids – my two under-tens, Ellie and Jack – were chanting "Are we there yet?" like a stuck record. I laughed it off as classic dad fail, but secretly cursed my phone's signal. Twenty minutes later, we spotted the lodge's cheeky buzzard signpost and pulled into the gravel drive, hearts lifting.

Buzzard Lodge is one of those proper Shropshire gems – a cosy wooden cabin tucked in a peaceful rural spot just outside Oswestry, surrounded by whispering woods and not a neighbour in sight. From the off, it felt like stepping into a hug. The owners had left fresh milk, eggs from local hens, and a cheeky note saying "Make yourselves at home, mind the buzzards overhead!" We tumbled out, stretching our legs, and the kids immediately dashed to the fenced garden, whooping at the sight of a tyre swing dangling from an old oak. I stood there, breathing in that crisp country air laced with woodsmoke from the chimney – pure bliss after the M54 crawl.

First impressions? Spot on for a relaxed family break. The lodge itself is compact but clever: a snug open-plan living area with a wood-burner already stocked with kindling (thank goodness, as the evening chill was creeping in). Plump sofas begged for lounging, and the kitchenette had everything from a cafetière to a slow cooker for tomorrow's stew. Up the creaky wooden stairs, three bedrooms waited – ours with a super-king bed that looked like cloud heaven, and the kids' rooms with bunks that had them bouncing like puppies. The views from the windows? Magic. Oswestry's gentle hills framed by ancient oaks, and in the distance, the faint outline of Llanymynech Rocks, all moody and inviting.

We wasted no time settling in. Chaos ensued as Jack tried to "help" unpack by hurling socks everywhere, while Ellie claimed the swing as her throne. I fired up the wood-burner – first time in ages – and we cracked open a bottle of local Shropshire cider (nabbed from a farm shop en route). Dinner was simple pleasures: cheese on toast with those fresh eggs scrambled, eaten on the veranda as the sun dipped low. The kids spotted a real buzzard circling – "It's Buzzard Lodge's mascot!" Ellie squealed – and we all chuckled at the lodge's name living up to its billing. A bit of light-hearted mayhem when the loo flush stuck briefly (classic cottage quirk, sorted with a jiggle), but it just added to the charm.

As night fell, stars popped out like someone flicked a celestial switch – no light pollution here, just inky sky and owl hoots. Sat by the fire with a cuppa, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Life's been a whirlwind lately – work deadlines, school runs, the usual grind. But here, in this little Shropshire haven, everything slowed. No screens pinging, just family giggles and the crackle of logs. It's the simple stuff that recharges you: muddy boots by the door, a swing's joyful squeak, that first deep breath of freedom. Buzzard Lodge nailed it on arrival – unpretentious, welcoming, and utterly restorative. Can't wait to explore more tomorrow, but honestly, this first evening's magic was enough.
