About Shropshire
Finally rolling up to Bluebell Treehouse that Friday afternoon, I was gobsmacked. Tucked into a peaceful spot just outside Ellesmere, this isn’t your bog-standard holiday let; it’s a proper treehouse vibe, elevated on stilts with a wraparound deck that feels like it’s floating among the trees. The owners greeted me with a cheery wave and a thermos of tea—proper builder’s brew, none of that herbal nonsense. As I hauled my bag up the wooden steps, the first impression hit me: pure, unadulterated cosiness. Inside, it’s all warm wood panelling, a cracking little kitchenette stocked with local Shropshire butter and fresh eggs, and a bed that looked like it was made for sinking into. No telly, mind—no distractions, just me, a stack of books I’d brought, and the gentle creak of the structure in the breeze. That first evening set the tone perfectly: doing bugger all, and loving every second. I cracked open a bottle of red from the nearby farm shop (picked up en route after my mud fiasco), plonked myself on the deck chair, and watched the sun dip behind the Shropshire Hills. The garden below is a riot of wildflowers and buzzing bees—bluebells nodding in the grass, hence the name, I reckon. No grand plans, just me sipping wine, feet up, letting the quiet wash over me. It’s funny how, back home, I’m always rushing—emails, meetings, the lot. Here? Time stretched out like elastic. I flicked through an old P.G. Wodehouse novel, chuckling at Bertie Wooster’s scrapes, and thought, blimey, this is what holidays are meant to be. Saturday morning dawned misty and soft, the kind of Shropshire day that begs you to linger in bed. I did, with a lazy fry-up using those eggs—nothing fancy, just bacon sizzling and toast crunching. No agenda, no alarm. Eventually, I wandered down to the garden, mug in hand, breathing in the damp earth smell. There’s a hammock strung between oaks, perfect for swinging gently while reading more Wodehouse. The joy of it all was in the slowness—the way the birdsong filled the air, uninterrupted by traffic hum. Mid-morning, I fancied a gentle potter, so I ambled the half-mile into Ellesmere. It’s a cracking little town, all Georgian facades and a serene mere (that’s a lake, for us southerners) where swans glide about like they own the place. I grabbed a paper and a pasty from the bakery—flaky, steaming, proper comfort food—then mooched back, no rush. By afternoon, I was back in full sloth mode, sprawled on the deck with a thermos of coffee, watching clouds scoot overhead. A light drizzle pattered down, but the treehouse canopy kept it cosy inside. I reflected then, properly, on how knackered I’d been feeling lately—chasing deadlines like a headless chicken. Here, in this Shropshire hideaway, I’d done sod all and felt brilliant for it. No hikes up distant hills, no packed itineraries; just the garden’s whisper, a good book, and the odd local stroll to the mere’s edge for a bit of fresh air. That evening, as twilight fell, I lit the wood burner (logs provided, bless ’em), wrapped up in a blanket, and savoured a simple supper of cheese and crackers. Pure bliss. Sunday crept in with birdsong chorus, and I extended my “doing nothing” streak with a long bath, steam fogging the window. One last lazy lap around the garden paths, picking a few blackberries for the road, and I was packed—reluctantly. Driving off, caked-in-mud car and all, I felt recharged. Bluebell Treehouse isn’t about adventures; it’s about permission to pause. If you’re after slowing down in the loveliest Shropshire nook, this is your spot. I’m already plotting a return. |
