About Shropshire
Pulling up to the lodge just as the sun dipped low, I was chuffed to bits. Tucked away in a quiet spot on the edge of Shrewsbury—probably no more than a couple of miles from the town centre—it felt like our own little secret. The stone-built place had that proper Shropshire charm: low-beamed ceilings, a wood-burner begging for logs, and three snug bedrooms upstairs that screamed family getaway. We dumped the bags, cracked open a bottle of local Ludlow Gold from the offy, and just soaked it in. First impressions? Blissful seclusion without feeling isolated. From the garden, you could hear the gentleSevern River murmuring nearby, and the air smelled of damp earth and wildflowers—pure countryside therapy. Keen to explore before dark, we wandered out with no real plan, which turned out to be the best decision. Shrewsbury's got its famous spots like the castle and the medieval streets, but we veered off the beaten path straight away, following a whim down a footpath by the lodge that led us to the riverbank. There, hidden behind a tangle of willows, was this cracking little weir—Quarrel's Weir, I later learned—where the water tumbled over mossy stones like something from a Tolkien tale. No crowds, just us, a heron eyeing us suspiciously, and the soft rush of the current. We sat on a fallen log, feet dangling, watching trout dart about. Proper magic, that—accidental gem number one, and we'd not even unpacked properly. Emboldened, we pushed on along the towpath, getting properly lost in the best way. The sat-nav stayed in the car; this was about serendipity. A mile or so on, we stumbled into this overlooked enclave by the river: a cluster of ancient fishermen's huts, their weathered wood leaning into the breeze, with wild garlic carpeting the bank. One had a bench outside, facing a bend where kingfishers flitted—bluish blurs that made you hold your breath. We'd gatecrashed someone's private idyll, but it felt welcoming, like Shropshire was sharing its secrets. Chuckling about my earlier mud bath, I thought how daft it is back home, glued to screens and schedules. Here, getting lost was the point—rediscovering that childlike thrill of the unknown. As dusk fell, we looped back via a sneaky lane that spat us out near the lodge, passing a tucked-away orchard heavy with unripe apples. First evening in, and already the place had us hooked: the lodge's warmth mirroring those off-radar joys outside. No grand plans needed; just open the door and let Shropshire whisper its wonders. Reflecting over tea in the kitchen, mug in hand, I realised this was exactly why I needed it—a gentle nudge to slow down, embrace the detours. Can't wait for day two's wanderings. |
