About Herefordshire
I’d barely made it out of Hereford when the satnav decided to throw a wobbly, directing me down a narrow lane that looked more like a sheep’s personal runway than a proper road. There I was, white-knuckling the steering wheel of my little hatchback, dodging brambles and wondering if I’d end up starring in a countryside horror flick. A quick U-turn (with a bit of creative reversing into a hedge) sorted it, and soon enough I was trundling towards Urishay Cottage—my cosy bolthole for three lazy days in Herefordshire. It was one of those insignificant mishaps that had me chuckling by the time I spotted the place nestled in its peaceful spot near the village, all stone walls and welcoming vibes.

Pulling up, the first thing that hit me was the quiet. Proper, enveloping quiet, broken only by the odd bird having a chinwag in the trees. The Cow Cott (as I affectionately dubbed it, given its rustic charm) sat there like it was waiting just for me, with its flower-draped entrance and thatched roof begging for a proper gawp. I hauled my weekend bag inside, and blimey, it was pure snug heaven: low-beamed ceilings, a wood burner already set with kindling (though I didn’t light it on that mild afternoon), and a kitchen that screamed “whip up a cuppa and forget the world”. The sofa looked like it’d swallow you whole in the best possible way, and those big windows framed a garden that rolled out like a green quilt, wildflowers nodding in the breeze.

First impressions? Instant relaxation. I dumped my stuff and headed straight for the garden, mug of tea in hand. It was massive, that garden—part lawn, part veggie patch with plump tomatoes begging to be ignored (who’s got the energy?), and a couple of weathered benches perfect for doing sod all. I plonked myself down, feet up, and just... watched. Watched the clouds do their slow-motion dance across the sky, watched a rabbit hop about like it owned the place. No rush, no schedule. That’s the joy of a spot like this: it whispers “slow down, you daft sod”, and you listen.

By late afternoon, I’d wandered the garden paths, sniffing herbs and pretending I knew one end of a lavender from the other. Light humour crept in when I tried lounging in the hammock—ended up tangled like a Christmas fairy light disaster, laughing at myself while a blackbird gave me side-eye from the fence. Back inside, I cracked open a dog-eared novel I’d brought (some cracking detective yarn set in the Midlands), curling up on that sofa with biscuits and zero guilt. The cottage wrapped around me like a favourite jumper: the Aga humming softly, fresh linens on the bed that practically tucked themselves in, and sunlight slanting through the panes to gild everything gold.

Evening rolled in lazy as you like. I pottered about a bit, but mostly it was gazing out at the sunset painting the Herefordshire hills in pinks and oranges. No grand plans—just me, the cottage, and this gentle nudge to breathe. It got me reflecting, sat there with my feet up: life back home’s a proper whirlwind of emails and errands, innit? Here, arriving felt like permission to pause, to savour the simple thrill of very little. No checklists, no FOMO. Just the creak of the floorboards, the scent of earth after a light shower, and the sheer bliss of switching off.

That first day set the tone for the whole getaway—pure, unadulterated loafing. If you’re after a Herefordshire hideaway that makes doing nowt feel like the height of luxury, The Cow Cott’s your spot. I was smitten from the off, and not a jot of regret.
