About Herefordshire
I’ll never forget the drive to Skylark, our cosy little cottage retreat in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire. It was a drizzly Friday afternoon in early autumn, the kind where the wipers do that annoying intermittent dance, and I’d promised the family a smooth three-hour jaunt from the Midlands. Naturally, I took a wrong turn somewhere near the A449, ending up on a narrow lane that twisted like a drunk snake through sodden fields. “Dad, are we lost?” piped up little Ollie from the back, his nose pressed to the window as we dodged a rogue pheasant. I laughed it off – classic me, turning a sat-nav glitch into an unplanned scenic tour of Herefordshire’s misty hedgerows. Twenty minutes later, we spotted the sign for Ross-on-Wye, hearts lifting as the River Wye came into view, all silvery and serpentine under the grey sky.

Pulling up to Skylark felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. Tucked just a stone’s throw from the town centre, this splendid cottage is the epitome of Herefordshire charm – a proper stone-built beauty with a thatched roof that screamed “proper countryside escape.” We’d booked it for a relaxed family break, no grand plans, just us four unwinding amid the lodge-life chaos. The owner, a cheery local chap named Mike, greeted us at the door with a tray of fresh scones and a pot of tea. “Welcome to your home from home,” he grinned, handing over the keys. Ollie and his sister Mia bolted inside before I could even park properly, their whoops echoing off the low-beamed ceilings.

First impressions? Bloody brilliant. The living room was a snug haven, with a wood-burning stove already crackling away – Mike’s touch, no doubt – and squashy sofas piled high with cushions that begged for a collapse. I flopped onto one, kicking off my boots, while the kids raided the welcome basket: local cider (non-alcoholic for them, obviously), a jar of homemade blackberry jam, and shortbread that melted in the mouth. “This is better than home!” Mia declared, crumbs tumbling down her jumper. The kitchen was a dream for lazy cooks like me – granite worktops, a Belfast sink, and all the gadgets you need for whipping up beans on toast without fuss. We’d barely unpacked when chaos ensued: Ollie knocked over a mug of tea, sending a tidal wave across the floor. “Lodge life, eh?” I chuckled, grabbing a tea towel. No harm done; it just added to the lived-in vibe.

Stepping out the back door onto the private patio was pure magic. Overlooking a wild garden that backed onto whispering woods, it had a bubbling hot tub (note to self: test that later) and a barbecue begging for sausages. The air smelled of damp earth and woodsmoke, with the faint hum of the Wye in the distance. We wandered five minutes down to the riverbank, skimming stones and watching narrowboats chug by. Ross-on-Wye’s high street was even closer – a quick five-minute stroll to grab fish and chips from the chippy, wrapped in paper that steamed up our faces on the walk back. Sat munching on the patio as dusk fell, with fairy lights twinkling on, it hit me: this is what holidays are for. Amid the simple pleasures – the creak of the floorboards, the kids’ laughter bouncing off the walls, the way the cottage wrapped you in its warmth – I had a quiet moment of self-reflection. Life back home rushes by in a blur of school runs and deadlines; here, time slowed to a gentle amble. Skylark wasn’t just a stay; it was a reset button for the soul.

By bedtime, with the stove glowing and everyone tucked into cosy beds upstairs (ours with a view of the starry sky through the skylight – clever name, that), I knew we’d struck gold. Herefordshire’s unpretentious beauty, wrapped up in this perfect little cottage, had us hooked from the off. Can’t wait to see what the next days bring, but honestly, this arrival alone was worth the trip.
