About Herefordshire
Pulling up to Foxglove, I was gobsmacked. Tucked away in a peaceful spot near Leominster, it’s one of those classic Herefordshire farm cottages – stone-built, with a thatched roof that looked like it’d been there since cider was just apple juice. Autumn had worked its magic here; the garden was a riot of rust-red foxgloves (cheekily still clinging on despite their name) and fallen leaves carpeting the gravel drive like a crunchy welcome mat. The air was crisp, that proper bracing chill that nips at your cheeks and makes you crave a brew. I hauled my bags in, the wooden door creaking open to reveal a cosy haven that screamed “put your feet up, love.” First impressions? Blimey, it was spot on for the season. The open-plan living room had a wood-burning stove already set with kindling – pure genius, as the October winds were whistling round the hills like they meant business. I lit it pronto, watching the flames dance and fill the place with that smoky, comforting scent that autumn practically demands. Outside the leaded windows, the Herefordshire landscape stretched out in all its amber glory: rolling fields dotted with sheep, ancient oaks shedding their coats in slow-motion drifts. No grand views of distant peaks here – just that intimate, quintessentially English patchwork you get in these parts, softened by the low, slanting sun that turns everything to gold. I dumped my stuff and headed straight for the kitchen, a proper country setup with an Aga humming away like a contented beast. Fancy trying a bit of that seasonal foraging vibe? I nipped out to the garden, where the apple tree was absolutely laden – knobbly Bramleys begging to be turned into crumble. Grabbed a handful, rustled up a cuppa, and plonked myself on the window seat with a book. The light filtered through in that hazy, harvest-festival way, casting long shadows across the flagstone floor. It was pure bliss, the kind of moment that makes you realise how knackering city life is. Wandering the garden path later that afternoon, I couldn’t help but grin at the seasonal quirks. Pumpkins from the veggie patch sat plump and orange by the door, and the air hummed with the faint, earthy tang of decaying leaves – not rotten, mind, just that rich, fertile promise of winter to come. A light drizzle started, typical Herefordshire mizzle, pattering on the pergola like gentle applause. I ducked back inside, feeling a proper twit for not packing wellies, but it only added to the charm. Cosied up by the fire with a slice of my makeshift crumble (lumpy, but who cares?), I reflected on how this time of year strips things back. No summer barbecues or spring blooms to distract – just you, the cottage, and nature doing its slow, spectacular turn. It’s humbling, innit? Makes you appreciate the quiet rhythm of places like this, especially when the world outside feels a bit mad. By evening, as the sun dipped low and painted the sky in bruised purples, Foxglove felt like home already. That first day’s impressions sealed it: autumn in Herefordshire isn’t just a backdrop; it’s the star, wrapping you in its mellow embrace and whispering that slowing down is the best holiday you can have. Can’t wait to go back – coffee stains and all. |
