I finally made it to that 3 Bed Lodge in Ledbury after what felt like the most faffing-about journey ever. Picture this: I'd packed the car the night before, all smug with my playlist of classic Britpop blaring, ready for a cracking three-day escape in Herefordshire. But no, ten minutes from the M50 turn-off, I managed to spill an entire thermos of builder's tea right across the passenger seat. Soggy maps, a drenched phone holder, and me swearing like a trooper while trying not to veer into the hedge. Classic me – can't even do a two-hour drive from the Midlands without turning it into a sitcom mishap. By the time I pulled up to the lodge on the edge of Ledbury, I was damp, irritable, and questioning my life choices.

The sat-nav had conked out midway, forcing me to wing it on memory and the odd road sign, but there it was: this cosy stone-built beauty tucked into a quiet spot just off the Ledbury high street buzz. I parked on the gravel drive – crunching under the tyres like a satisfying ASMR video – and stepped out into that fresh Herefordshire air, all earthy and apple-orchard sweet.
