About Herefordshire
Pulling into the gravel drive, the first character we met was Reg, the chap who handed over the keys. He was proper Herefordshire – tweed flat cap, boots caked in mud from what looked like a morning wrestling cows, and a handshake like a vice. “You the London lot?” he grinned, eyeing our shiny hire car. “Don’t worry, we won’t hold it against you. Just mind the pheasants; they’ve got right of way round here.” Reg launched into a yarn about the time a fox nicked his best hen mid-market day in Hereford, complete with impressions that had us in stitches before we’d even unpacked. He pointed out the wood burner (“Stack it high, lads, nights get nippy”) and the hot tub (“Don’t overdo the bubbles unless you want a foam party”), then vanished with a wink, leaving us chuckling. Inside, the lodge felt like a hug from an old friend – beams overhead, tartan throws, and a kitchen that screamed “rustic charm.” But it was the locals who turned arrival into something special. No sooner had we cracked open a couple of Hereford ales than there was a knock. Enter Maureen, Reg’s wife, bearing a tray of her famous scones and clotted cream. “Thought you might be peckish after the road,” she said, plonking it down with zero fuss. Over tea, she regaled us with tales of the village fete – “Last year, old Bert from the pub entered the marrow competition with a beast the size of a lorry tyre. Won hands down, then got disqualified for usin’ miracle-gro from his greenhouse!” Her laugh was infectious, all gravelly warmth, and she quizzed us on city life like we were exotic specimens. “Traffic? In Hereford, the biggest jam’s when the cattle market’s on!” We hadn’t even ventured beyond the garden gate, but the characters kept coming. Next up was young Ollie, the lad from the neighbouring farm, popping by on his quad bike to “check the fence,” though I reckon he was after biscuits. Barely out of school, with freckles and a grin wider than the Wye, he fixed us with a stare. “You lot fishin’ tomorrow? River’s full of barbel – but watch for the otters, they’re cheeky buggers, steal your bait right off the hook.” Ollie’s passion for the local trout was pure poetry; he described hooking a monster like it was a dragon slaying. Dave and I swapped fishing fibs, but Ollie trumped us with his “legendary” 10-pounder, eyes sparkling. “Come find me if you need worms – fresh dug this mornin’!” As the evening light faded, we fired up the hot tub, beers in hand, reflecting on how these quirky souls had made our first hours magic. Sat there bubbling away, I had a quiet moment pondering how, in the rush of London life, I’d forgotten the joy of proper natter with strangers who feel like mates after five minutes. Herefordshire’s not just about the rolling hills or the cider orchards nearby – it’s these folk, with their stories and smiles, that make a lodge feel like home. Reg swung by one last time with logs, promising more tales tomorrow. If arrival’s this good, who needs days two and three? Bloody brilliant start. |
