About Herefordshire
Stepping inside for the first time felt like slipping into a hug from an old mate. The place is compact but spot-on for our family of four – me, the wife, and the two lads, aged 8 and 10, who were already bouncing off the walls after the car journey. The open-plan living area hits you straight away: a squishy sofa piled with cushions, a wood-burning stove begging for logs, and a kitchenette that's small but kitted out with everything you'd need for bacon butties and cups of tea. I could smell the faint whiff of pine from the logs stacked by the door – proper lodge life, innit? We dumped the bags and cracked open a pack of biscuits while the kids claimed their bunk beds in the second bedroom. "This is better than a hotel!" my youngest declared, clambering up the ladder like he'd conquered Everest. I had to agree; no stuffy corridors or queueing for breakfast here. First impressions? Blissfully relaxed, with just the right smattering of chaos. We fired up the stove – or tried to. I faffed about with the kindling for a good ten minutes, swearing under my breath while the wife rolled her eyes and the boys chanted "Fire! Fire!" like mini pyromaniacs. Eventually, it caught, and we all huddled round with mugs of hot chocolate, watching the flames dance. Outside, the garden was a riot of wildflowers and a little patio with chairs that screamed "put your feet up." Leominster's just a short hop away – we nipped into town that first afternoon for essentials from the local shops. Grabbed some fresh bread from the bakery on the high street, a bit of local cheese from the market, and treated the kids to ice creams from that old-school parlour. Nothing fancy, but proper Herefordshire simple pleasures: the sun warming our faces, church bells pealing in the distance, and not a soul hassling us. As the sun dipped low, painting the rolling fields gold, we barbecued sausages on the lodge's little grill – slightly charred, as per family tradition. The boys chased each other round the garden, kicking a football into the hedges, while I sat back with a beer, listening to the birds settling in. That's when it hit me, a quiet moment of reflection amid the lodge life madness: how often do we rush about, glued to screens and schedules? Here, in this unpretentious corner of Herefordshire, everything slowed right down. No grand plans, just us, the crackle of the fire, and the soft hum of countryside quiet. The mishap on the drive? Forgotten already. This wee lodge had us hooked from minute one – a perfect pitstop for recharging batteries and making daft memories. By bedtime, the kids were shattered, conked out in their bunks, and we adults lingered by the stove, plotting lazy days ahead. If you're after a no-fuss family break where the highlights are muddy wellies and full tummies, this 2 Bed Lodge in Leominster is the ticket. Can't wait to come back. |
