About Wiltshire
I’ll never forget the drive to Woodland Container Lodges SLP 2 in Wiltshire – a proper faff from the off. We’d piled into the car in Westbury, me, the missus, and our two lads, aged eight and ten, buzzing for a three-day family getaway. Sat-nav said 20 minutes from the train station, but no, some cheeky roadworks near the A36 turned it into a 45-minute crawl. And then, the mishap: I’d packed the wrong boots, the ones with a dodgy sole that flapped like a dying fish halfway up the gravel track to the lodges. “Dad, you look like a pirate with a peg leg!” my youngest cackled from the back seat. Laugh? I nearly cried, but it set the tone – a bit of lodge life chaos before we’d even unpacked.

Pulling up to SLP 2, tucked away in those whispering woodlands just outside Westbury, it was love at first sight. The place is one of a handful of these snug container lodges, all perched on the edge of nature like they’ve been plonked there by a mischievous giant. Ours was the perfect family fit: two bedrooms, a cosy lounge with a telly bigger than our living room one back home, and a kitchenette stocked with all the essentials – kettle, toaster, and enough tea bags to sink a ship. Stepping inside, the first whiff hit me: fresh linen and that faint piney scent from the surrounding trees. No grand manor house, mind – just pure, unpretentious bliss. The lads were straight out the door, whooping as they discovered the shared hot tub bubbling away like a witch’s cauldron under the trees. “Can we get in now, Dad?” Nope, not till we’d claimed our territory.

First impressions? It felt like stepping into a secret den. The decking wrapped around the lodge, with chairs begging for a cuppa while you watch rabbits hop about in the undergrowth. Wiltshire’s rolling fields stretched out beyond, all lush green and dotted with sheep, the sort of view that makes you breathe deeper without realising. We cracked open the windows – they slid smooth as butter – and the birdsong flooded in. Chaos ensued when the boys tried ‘helping’ unpack: biscuits everywhere, one sock vanished into the sofa cushions. “This is better than home!” the eldest declared, already plotting den-building with sticks from the woodland floor. I chuckled, handing him a broom – lodge life means embracing the mess, right?

That first afternoon, we wandered the immediate paths winding through the woods, no more than a stone’s throw from the lodge. Spotted a fox scarpering off, which had the kids in fits – “It’s like Disney, but with real poo!” We kept it simple: brewed tea on the go, munched flapjacks from the local Westbury bakery we’d grabbed en route (Inspire Café, if you’re ever passing – their sausage rolls are legendary). Back at SLP 2, sunset painted the containers gold, and we fired up the BBQ on the deck. Sausages sizzling, laughter echoing – pure family magic. The hot tub called after; us parents slipped in first while the boys splashed about, turning it into a pirate ship battle. Steamy water, starry sky peeking through branches – I caught myself reflecting there, bubbles up to my chin. Life’s mad rush back home? Forgotten. Here, it’s these daft moments – flapping boots, soggy socks, kiddo giggles – that recharge the soul. Why chase far-flung beaches when Wiltshire’s woodland whispers are this close?

By evening, tucked up on the surprisingly comfy beds, with the woodland hush outside, I knew we’d nailed it. First impressions don’t lie: Woodland Container Lodges SLP 2 is the antidote to everyday grind, a cosy bolthole for simple pleasures and a smidge of joyful disorder. Can’t wait to return – proper home from home.
