About Wiltshire
The lodge itself is a proper cosy haven, tucked right by the water with that gentle ripple of the canal outside the window. I arrived to the owner popping by with a wave and a basket of local eggs – proper farm-fresh ones that made me feel instantly at home. Stepping inside, it was all low beams, squishy sofas, and a wood burner begging to be lit, even if it was a mild spring day. My dog, Monty, went mental sniffing every corner, tail wagging like a windscreen wiper on full beam. First impressions? Blissful escape pod from real life. I dumped my bag and headed straight out to the garden – or should I say, paradise plot. It's enclosed and private, with loungers overlooking the water where narrowboats chug by ever so slowly. I plonked myself down with a cuppa from the well-stocked kitchen (proper tea bags, none of that leafy nonsense), and watched Monty chase shadows while ducks quacked their approval. No itinerary, no alarms – just the joy of bugger all. Sat there reading a battered copy of Bill Bryson I'd brought, chuckling at his tales while the sun filtered through the trees. Felt like the world had hit pause. That first evening, I couldn't be arsed to go far, so I wandered a few steps to the canal path for a mooch. Wiltshire's got that flat, lush vibe hereabouts, all water meadows and the odd heron posing dramatically. Picked up a pasty from the village shop – flaky, steaming, stuffed with proper Westbury steak – and brought it back to devour on the patio. Monty got the crusts, naturally, his eyes all pleading innocence. Laughed at myself thinking how I'd usually be hammering emails or faffing about; instead, here I was, feet up, letting the day melt away. Next morning – well, after a lie-in that stretched to noon – I cracked open the French doors and turned the garden into my personal spa. Lounged with more coffee, flicking through a magazine, listening to the birds and the faint hum of a boat engine. Did a spot of leisurely exploring on foot, just a short stroll to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal towpath. Spotted kingfishers darting about (or maybe they were just blue flashes – who cares?), and waved at walkers who looked as chilled as me. Back at the lodge, I lit that wood burner anyway, for the crackle and glow, and curled up with my book again. Monty snored on the rug, dead to the world. By Sunday, my first impressions had deepened into full-on love affair. This place is made for slowing right down – no pressure, just you, the water's lullaby, and whatever whim takes you. I reflected gently over a late brunch (those eggs scrambled to perfection) on how knackered I'd been from life’s treadmill. Waterside Lodge reminded me it's dead good to do very little sometimes; recharges the soul better than any gym. Monty agreed, flat out in the sun. If you're after lazy lodge days in Wiltshire, with pets in tow and not a care, this is your spot. Already plotting a return – sans sat-nav drama, hopefully. |
