About Wiltshire
I finally made it to Lakeside Lodges near Westbury in Wiltshire after what felt like the scenic route from hell—well, not hell, just a cheeky wrong turn onto a single-track lane that had me reversing into a hedge while the kids in the back seat chanted "Are we there yet?" like a broken satnav. It was one of those classic family holiday mishaps: me, swearing under my breath at the sheep staring judgementally, while my other half stifled giggles and passed me a ginger nut for moral support. But honestly, that little chaos set the tone perfectly for our three-day jaunt—nothing too polished, just proper relaxed lodge life.

Pulling up to the place around teatime on that drizzly Friday, I was proper chuffed. Lakeside Lodges isn't some flashy resort; it's a cluster of cosy wooden cabins dotted around a serene fishing lake, the sort of spot where the world slows right down. Ours was one of those pet-friendly hot tub lodges—Lodge 4, I think—with a veranda overlooking the water, ducks paddling about like they owned the joint. We tumbled out of the car, bags flying everywhere, and the kids immediately legged it to the lake's edge, poking at the reeds with sticks. "Mind the mud!" I yelled, but it was no use; within minutes, my youngest had a face like a chocolate digestive dunked one too many times.

Stepping inside was pure bliss after the drive. The open-plan living space smelled faintly of pine and fresh linen, with a wood-burning stove begging for a fire later (though we didn't light it straight away—too knackered). Plump sofas, a telly for rainy evenings, and a kitchen kitted out with everything you'd need for beans on toast or a full English. The bedrooms were snug as a bug: ours had a king-size bed with those hotel-quality duvets that make you never want to leave, and the kids' room had bunks they claimed faster than you can say "top one!" The en-suites were spotless, power showers thumping away any road-weary tension.

First impressions? It screamed family heaven. We cracked open a bottle of plonk I'd stashed in the cool bag, and while the other half rustled up pasta, I nipped out to the private hot tub. Blimey, that was the business—bubbles churning under a sky turning pink over the lake, steam rising like a proper spa day, minus the hefty price tag. The kids, meanwhile, discovered the playground just a stone's throw away: swings, a slide, and a little climbing frame that had them whooping till dark. Chaos ensued when my eldest tried to "fish" with a shoelace and hook from the kitchen drawer—ended up with a soggy sock instead of supper. We all collapsed laughing on the veranda, watching the sun dip behind the willows.

That evening, as we munched on fish fingers (gourmet, obviously) and played Uno by lamplight, I had one of those quiet moments. Staring out at the glassy lake, ripples from a jumping fish, I thought about how these simple setups—like Lakeside Lodges—cut through the noise. No grand plans, just us lot together, mud on our shoes and steam from the tub curling into the night air. Work stress? What work stress? In that bubble, with the faint quack of ducks as our soundtrack, I felt properly recharged. Wiltshire's got that magic, doesn't it? Rolling fields whispering "slow down," and lodges like these making it dead easy.

By bedtime, the lodge felt like home already—kids zonked out, us sipping tea in the glow of fairy lights strung outside. First day in, and I was already plotting a repeat. If you're after a laid-back family break with a splash of pond-side pandemonium, Lakeside Lodges is your spot. Proper mint.
