About Wiltshire
I’ll never forget the drive to Exclusive Lodge 4 Bed Ht in Wiltshire – a proper British road trip comedy of errors. We’d set off from Salisbury early, sat-nav chirping away, only for me to take a wrong turn at a cheeky roundabout near Wilton. Ended up in a muddy farm track, wheels spinning like a scene from a Clarkson documentary. “Blimey, are we glamping in a tractor now?” I joked to my mate Dave, who was already moaning about his Fiat’s suspension. Twenty minutes and a sheepdog’s dirty look later, we were back on track, trundling down those winding lanes lined with chocolate-box thatched cottages. By the time we pulled up to the lodge just outside Salisbury, the sun was dipping low, casting that golden Wiltshire glow over the hot tub and the sprawling garden. First impressions? Absolute stunner – modern inside with all the bells and whistles, but tucked away in proper countryside bliss.

No sooner had we unloaded the boot than old Bert shuffled over from the neighbouring farm. He’s the sort of local you only find in these parts: flat cap, wellies caked in mud, and a face like a wrinkled leather satchel. “You lot from the big smoke, eh?” he grinned, eyeing our London plates. “Don’t go drownin’ in that hot tub – had a posh lot last month who bubbled themselves pinker than a Wiltshire bacon slice.” We burst out laughing, and before we knew it, Bert was regaling us with tales of the 1980s when he’d sneak pheasants from the estate for the village pub. “Landlord’d say, ‘Bert, you’re a right scamp,’ but he never turned down a free bird.” His wife, Gladys, popped her head over the hedge next, apron dusted with flour. “Tea?” she bellowed, thrusting a Tupperware of her legendary scones at us. Proper doorstoppers they were, slathered in clotted cream thicker than Bert’s accent. Sat there on the lodge deck, munching away, it hit me – this was the real Wiltshire welcome, quirky as a crooked mile.

Next morning, first full day, we wandered down to the village shop not five minutes’ stroll away – a tiny emporium called something like “Hampshire’s End Stores,” run by twins Reg and Ted. Identical as two peas, right down to their corduroy trousers, but you could tell Reg apart by his wonky tooth. “Morning, lads! Hot tub holiday, is it?” Ted winked, having clearly had the lowdown from Bert. We nodded, grabbing milk and papers, and Reg launched into a monologue about the time a hot air balloon from the Salisbury festival crash-landed in his back field. “Sheered off me washing line – knickers everywhere! Council fined ’em, but I got a free ride next year.” Dave nearly choked on his Hobnob. These blokes were gold; their banter flowed like the nearby River Nadder, full of gentle piss-taking and local lore. “You staying for the fete tomorrow?” Reg asked. “Bert’s entering his marrow again – size of a rugby ball, that thing. Thinks it’ll win him the rosettes this year.”

We didn’t make the fete – too knackered from lounging in the lodge’s plush lounge, firing up the log burner – but that chat stuck with us. Afternoon brought Mrs. Pargeter from the post office, cycling up with a parcel we hadn’t even ordered. “Compliments of the estate,” she said, all pearls and tweed. Turned out to be local cider from an orchard half a mile off. Over a sneaky glass in the garden (hot tub bubbling invitingly), she shared whispers about the “ghost badger” that haunts the woods behind the lodge. “Seen it meself, bold as brass,” she insisted, eyes twinkling. “But don’t fret – it only nicks your bins if you’ve been naughty.” Pure fiction, no doubt, but her delivery had us in stitches, imagining spectral raids on our recycling.

As the sun set on that first evening, feet up in the lodge’s cosy hot tub, steaming away the drive’s woes, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Amid all the characters – Bert’s yarns, the twins’ mischief, Mrs. P’s tall tales – it struck me how these quirky locals make a place like this. Not the fancy fixtures or the views (though they’re cracking), but the people who fold you into their world with a scone and a story. Three days in Wiltshire, and we’d barely scratched the surface, but those first impressions? They’ve got me plotting a return already.
