About Wiltshire
Pulling up, my first impression was pure bliss: this isn’t some draughty old cottage, it’s a proper cosy haven tucked into a peaceful spot just outside Salisbury. The lodge sits in its own lush garden, all rolling lawns and flowerbeds bursting with foxgloves and lavender – Wiltshire at its lazy best. I hopped out, luggage in tow, and the fresh air hit me like a gentle hug. No city smog here; just that clean, earthy scent you only get in the countryside. The owners had left a cheeky note on the door: “Welcome! Sauna key in the kitchen, milk in the fridge.” Proper thoughtful, that. Stepping inside, I was smitten. The open-plan living area is all warm wood and squishy sofas, with a wood-burning stove begging for a lazy evening fire (though it was a balmy June day, so no need yet). Huge windows frame the garden, letting in floods of light – perfect for flopping down with a cuppa and a book. The kitchen’s kitted out brilliantly: Aga-style cooker, all the gadgets, and a breakfast bar where I immediately cracked open a local Wiltshire beer from the fridge stock-up. Three bedrooms upstairs, each with that plush, just-right-for-sinking-into duvets, and en-suites that scream “treat yourself.” But the star? That private sauna out the back, steaming away invitingly. I could already picture lazy sessions in there after a gentle wander. Unpacking took about five minutes – I’d packed light, figuring the joy of this trip was doing bugger all. First impressions screamed “slow down, mate.” I mooched out to the garden, sprawling on a lounger with a dog-eared copy of some P.G. Wodehouse for a giggle. The sun filtered through the trees, birds twittering away, and not a soul in sight. It was like the world had hit pause. After an hour of turning pages slower than treacle, I fancied a nose around. A short stroll – honestly, not five minutes – took me to a nearby footpath winding through fields dotted with those classic Wiltshire sheep, all fluffy and oblivious. No rushing to landmarks; just ambling, spotting butterflies, breathing deep. Back at the lodge, I fired up the sauna for a ten-minute sweat, emerging pink and pudding-like, ready for a plate of cheese on toast made leisurely on the hob. That first afternoon set the tone: pure, unadulterated loafing. No itinerary, no alarms. As I sat on the deck with the sunset painting the sky all pink and gold, nursing a gin and tonic, I had a proper moment of self-reflection. Life back home’s a mad whirl – deadlines, Tube crushes, endless scrolling. Here, in this sauna lodge bubble, I realised how knackered I’d been. Doing very little? It’s not lazy; it’s essential. By bedtime, tucked under crisp sheets with the garden owl hooting outside, I was already plotting two more days of the same: reading till my eyes drooped, pottering in the garden, maybe a slow pub lunch in Salisbury if the mood took me. Wiltshire’s magic isn’t in ticking boxes; it’s in this – switching off, savouring the quiet. What a find. Can’t wait to wake up to it all over again. |
