About Wiltshire
I finally made it to that posh "Exclusive 2 Bedroom Sauna Lodge Sleeps 4" near Salisbury in Wiltshire after a right faff of a drive down from London. It was meant to be a straightforward three-day jaunt with my mate Dave, but wouldn't you know it, about 20 minutes from the A303, I managed to spill my entire flask of builder's tea all over the passenger seat. Soggy cushions and a whiff of Earl Grey followed me the rest of the way – classic me, turning a simple road trip into a comedy sketch. Still, as we trundled into the Wiltshire countryside, the rolling chalk downs and those ancient stone walls peeking through the hedges made me forget the mess pretty sharpish.

Pulling up to the lodge just after lunch on that first day, I was gobsmacked. Tucked away in a peaceful spot within a stone's throw of Salisbury – probably no more than a couple of miles from the cathedral spires – it looked every bit the exclusive hideaway. Wooden cladding gleaming under patchy clouds, a private decking area begging for a cuppa, and that sauna pod promising post-hike bliss. We unloaded the car in a drizzle that was more of a cheeky mist than proper rain, and stepped inside to cosy vibes: two snug bedrooms with fluffy duvets, a slick open-plan kitchen-lounge smelling faintly of pine, and floor-to-ceiling windows framing the lush fields. First impressions? Bloody luxurious for a lodge – felt like we'd stumbled into our own little Scandinavian bolthole, right in the heart of Wiltshire.

Keen to shake off the drive, we laced up our boots for an afternoon hike along the nearby paths towards Old Sarum. The weather was playing nice at first – bright spells with a crisp autumn bite, perfect for crunching over dew-kissed grass. We followed the undulating trails through sheep-dotted pastures, the wind whispering secrets from the Iron Age hillfort ruins up ahead. Dave was banging on about how the views rivalled the Lake District, and I had to admit, with Salisbury Plain stretching out like a green quilt, it was pure magic. We paused for snaps at the earthworks, me pretending to be a druid for the laughs, feeling that rare buzz of proper escapism.

But oh, British weather – never one to let you get too comfy. By tea time, the sky turned moody, unleashing a proper downpour that had us legging it back to the lodge like drowned rats. Plans for a sunset stroll round the close-by water meadows? Scrubbed. Instead, we huddled in the sauna, steam rising as we thawed out, chuckling about how we'd packed shorts like optimistic fools. That evening, as rain lashed the windows, we rustled up fish and chips from a local spot (delivered, naturally) and sprawled on the sofa, the lodge's underfloor heating working overtime. It was blissfully cosy, the kind that makes you grateful for the chaos outside.

The next morning dawned misty, so we opted for a gentler wander along the River Avon paths, just a hop from the lodge. Fog clung to the willows like a soft blanket, turning the hike into a dreamy shuffle past herons and nodding wildflowers. Halfway round, the clouds parted for golden shafts of sun, and we picnicked on a bench overlooking the water – cheese ploughman's from the car boot, naturally. But by noon, hailstones the size of marbles pelted down, forcing an abrupt about-turn. Laughing through chattering teeth, we dashed back, dripping and delirious.

Sitting there later, sauna session number two steaming up the glass, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Here I was, mid-40s, city grind behind me, pondering how these weather-whipped walks had stripped everything back to basics – mud on the boots, rain on the face, mate by your side. Wiltshire's got this knack for reminding you life's not about grand plans, but rolling with the squalls. First impressions of the lodge? It was the perfect base for it all – exclusive, yeah, but ever so welcoming amid the whims of the British great outdoors. Can't wait to go back.
