I finally made it to Weymouth after what felt like the world's most faffing-about drive from the Midlands, and let me tell you, the arrival at The Hideaway was pure organised chaos – in the best possible way. I'd set off bright and early, or so I thought, only to realise halfway down the A35 that I'd left my phone charger plugged into the kitchen socket back home. Typical me, innit? No biggie, I figured; Weymouth's only a few hours away, and the sat-nav was doing its thing. But then, just as I hit the outskirts, Dorset's cheeky summer traffic decided to throw a spanner in the works. A lorry had jackknifed near Dorchester – nothing major, but it turned the dual carriageway into a car park. I sat there drumming my fingers on the steering wheel, eyeing the Jurassic Coast signs and promising myself a pint at the end of it.

By the time I rolled into Weymouth proper, the sun was dipping low over the harbour, painting everything in that golden light that makes you forget the M5 crawl. The Hideaway's tucked away in a quiet spot just off the bustling seafront – close enough to hear the gulls squawking and the faint hum of the Nothe Fort steam train chugging by, but far enough to feel like your own little secret. I parked up (after a three-point turn that nearly had the neighbours peeking through their nets), grabbed my bags, and punched in the key safe code. The door swung open to this cosy nook of a cottage, and blimey, it hit me like a warm Weymouth breeze.

First impressions? Bloody brilliant. Step inside, and you're in a snug open-plan living area that screams "kick off your shoes and stay a while." The sofa looked like it was made for sinking into after a beach day, piled high with cushions in seaside blues and whites. A wood-burning stove sat in the corner, all ready for cosier evenings (though with the weather we had, it stayed unlit). The kitchen was a doddle – compact but kitted out with everything from a Nespresso machine to proper sharp knives, which is more than I manage at home. I cracked open a bottle of local ale I'd picked up at the Tesco Express on the way in (post-mishap pit stop), and plonked myself at the dining table, which doubled as a perfect spot for scribbling holiday notes.

Wandering upstairs, I found the bedroom – a proper haven with a super-king bed that could've swallowed me whole. Crisp white sheets, fluffy pillows, and a window framing the rooftops towards the harbour. The en-suite was spotless, with a rainfall shower that I tested immediately (hot water on tap, thank goodness). No creaky floors or dodgy locks; it felt fresh, like the owners had just given it a spruce-up. From the little balcony, I could glimpse the beach – Weymouth's sandy stretch with families paddling and the pier lights twinkling on. That insignificant charger fiasco? Forgotten. Instead, I was grinning at how this place wrapped around you like a favourite jumper.

As I unpacked, sipping that ale and watching the sun set properly now, I had one of those gentle moments of reflection. Life's full of little mishaps – lost chargers, traffic jams – but they make the good bits shine brighter. Here I was, three days of seaside bliss ahead, in a hideaway that felt tailor-made for unwinding. No grand plans yet; just the joy of arriving somewhere that instantly felt like home.
