About Roman Lodge.

Preston is a little seaside village with a variety of shops and great pubs, and it is conveniently placed just one mile from Weymouth's famed beach resort. Weymouth has something for everyone with its beautiful golden beaches, fantastic watersports facilities, and lively harbour. Take a short drive to Portland's craggy isle, which is connected to the mainland by Chesil Beach, which is part of the beautiful World Heritage Coastline.

Guarding the principal route through the Purbeck Hills, the 1000 year old Corfe Castle’s dramatic remains stand in an elevated position as a representation of its colourful and significant history. The tumbledown, moss embellished walls and rugged beauty conceal its diverse and often turbulent past.

About Weymouth
I finally rolled into Weymouth after a bit of a faff on the A354 from Dorchester – nothing major, just me taking a wrong turn onto a narrow lane that dead-ended at some farmer's gate, leaving me swearing at the satnav like it was my ex. But hey, that's the joy of these Dorset backroads; they force you to slow down and stumble on the good stuff. By the time I pulled up to Roman Lodge on Thursday afternoon, the sun was glinting off the sea, and I was proper chuffed to be there for a three-day jaunt.

Roman Lodge is one of those cracking little cottages tucked away in the quieter bit of Weymouth, just a short wander from the main drag but feeling worlds away. It's got that classic seaside vibe – think whitewashed walls, a cheeky little front garden bursting with hydrangeas, and a porch perfect for dumping sandy trainers. I let myself in with the key safe code, and blimey, the place smelled of fresh linen and that faint tang of the ocean. Cosy as owt, with a compact kitchen that had everything from a Nespresso pod machine (lifesaver) to a stack of board games I eyed for rainy evenings. The lounge had a wood burner begging to be lit, though the weather held out nicely, and upstairs, my bedroom overlooked a jumble of rooftops towards the harbour. First impressions? Spot on for unwinding – no frills, just proper home-from-home comfort that makes you kick off your shoes and exhale.

But the real magic of Roman Lodge hit me straight away: its location is a launchpad for accidental discoveries, the sort of hidden gems you only find when you ditch the map and let your feet lead. Unpacked in ten minutes flat, I grabbed my trainers and headed out, no itinerary, just a vague plan to "get lost" in the nearby lanes. Weymouth's got its touristy spots like the beach and pier, but I veered off sharpish towards the backstreets behind the lodge, ending up on a footpath that snaked along the old railway cutting. Total fluke – I'd misread a signpost and followed it anyway. It spat me out at East Weare Gardens, this lush little secret garden right by the harbour, all tropical palms and cascading flowers that felt like stumbling into a Cornish jungle. Locals were picnicking under the gazebos, and I plonked down with a pasty from a hole-in-the-wall bakery I'd passed en route. Pure bliss, watching yachts bob without the crowds shoving past.

Emboldened, I wandered further along the harbourside paths, ignoring the main Nothe Fort route for a scrambly trail that hugged the cliffs. Nearly twisted my ankle on a root, mind – light humour there for you, me the intrepid explorer reduced to yelping like a startled seagull. But it led to this overlooked cove at White Horse, a pebbly beach hemmed in by chalky cliffs, where the water was so clear I could see crabs scuttling about. No one else around bar a couple of dog walkers; I skimmed stones till my arm ached, feeling like a kid again. These off-the-beaten-path finds – the gardens, the cove – they were all within a ten-minute potter from the lodge, proving how Weymouth rewards the wanderer.

Sat on the cottage's sunny patio that evening with a GandT, feet up on a wonky stool, I had a proper moment of self-reflection. Life back home's a whirlwind of deadlines and doom-scrolling; here, getting lost wasn't a mistake, it was the point. Roman Lodge gave me that nudge – close enough to the action but hidden enough to uncover Weymouth's quieter pulse. Fish and chips delivered (greasy perfection), I crashed early, already plotting tomorrow's aimless ramble. If you're after a base for serendipitous seaside magic, this is your spot. Can't wait to go back and lose myself all over again.
