About Weymouth
I finally made it to Weymouth after what felt like the longest drive from Bristol, our little Fiesta groaning under the weight of cool bags, beach toys, and enough snacks to feed a small army. It was one of those classic family road trips where the kids—Ellie, who's seven going on seventeen, and little Tom, five and full of beans—started off sweetly singing along to the radio before descending into a full-on squabble over who got the last Haribo. And then, the mishap: about ten miles out, I took a wrong turn onto some narrow lane that dead-ended at a muddy farm track. Cue Dad swearing under his breath (mildly, of course) while reversing into a hedge. The car emerged with a fetching sprig of bramble stuck to the bumper, and we all had a good laugh as I plucked it off. "Welcome to Dorset," I quipped, and off we went again, windows down, salt air already tickling our noses.

Pulling up to Overcombe Mill just as the sun dipped low over the Jurassic Coast felt like stumbling into a storybook. Tucked away in Overcombe, this converted watermill sits right by the River Jordan, its stone walls all weathered charm and thatched roof straight out of a postcard. We're only a couple of miles from Weymouth's bustling beachfront, but it might as well be a world away—peaceful, with the gentle rush of the weir just outside and cows mooching about in the adjacent fields. I parked on the gravel drive, gravel crunching underfoot like the opening scene of a proper British holiday, and we piled out, stretching our legs after the two-hour haul.

The first impressions? Pure magic, laced with that delightful lodge-life chaos we secretly love. Unlocking the heavy oak door (key hidden under a flowerpot, as per the host's note—trusting souls, these Dorset folk), we stepped into a cosy nook that screamed "relax and unwind." Low-beamed ceilings, flagstone floors, and a wood-burner already stacked with logs, begging for an evening crackle. The open-plan kitchen-diner had everything: a Belfast sink for washing sandy veg, a Rayburn cooker that looked like it could whip up a Sunday roast single-handedly, and a scrubbed pine table perfect for messy family meals. Up the creaky stairs (Tom declared them his personal jungle gym), the bedrooms were snug as a bug—our double with views over the garden to the river, and the kids' room with bunks that had Ellie bouncing before we'd even unpacked.

We dumped the bags and headed straight out to explore, because who can resist first-night adventures? The private garden sloped down to the riverbank, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, and there was the hot tub—oh yes, bubbling away under a pergola, calling our names. But chaos struck early: Tom, in his excitement, tripped over a garden gnome (yes, really—cheeky little fellow with a fishing rod) and face-planted into a flowerbed. Muddy tears ensued, swiftly fixed with a cuddle and a biscuit from the welcome pack (local fudge and shortbread—score!). We laughed it off, rinsed him under the outdoor tap, and fired up the barbecue. Sausages sizzling, the weir providing a soothing soundtrack, we watched the sun set pink over the water. Ellie spotted her first heron, majestic and unbothered, while I sipped a cold lager, feeling that rare holiday glow.

That first evening, as we soaked in the hot tub—stars popping out overhead, steam rising like a cosy fog—I had a quiet moment of self-reflection. Here we were, a slightly frazzled family from the city, trading concrete for this slice of timeless England. It's funny how a wrong turn and a gnome-tumble can remind you that the best breaks aren't about grand plans, but these simple pleasures: river murmurs, kid giggles, and the promise of beach days ahead. Overcombe Mill had us hooked from minute one—our perfect base for three days of Weymouth bliss, starting with sandy toes at Greenhill or Overcombe Beach tomorrow. Can't wait.
