About St Ives
I finally made it to The Secret Seascape in Carbis Bay, just a stone's throw from St Ives, after what felt like the world's most faffing-about drive down from up country. We'd packed the car to the gills with kids' beach toys, a cool box of pasties from the services, and enough crisps to siege a castle. Naturally, about 20 minutes from the turning for St Erth station, I took a wrong slip road and ended up in a queue of caravans crawling along the A30 like they'd all got the same dodgy sat-nav. "Dad, are we there yet?" piped up little Ollie from the back, for the umpteenth time, just as I spotted a pasty wrapper blowing out the window like a distress signal. Classic family holiday chaos, but honestly, it set the tone for the relaxed vibe we were craving.

Pulling up to the cottage late afternoon, I was gobsmacked. Tucked away in a quiet spot overlooking the bay, The Secret Seascape is one of those proper Cornish gems – a cosy little lodge that looks like it's been plucked from a postcard. We parked right outside, unloaded the boot in a flurry of sandy wellies and forgotten umbrellas, and stepped inside. The first impression? Pure bliss. It's all wooden beams and soft lighting, with massive windows framing the shimmering sea – Porthkidney Sands stretching out like a golden invite. The open-plan living area had this lived-in charm: a squishy sofa begging for a collapse, a telly for rainy evenings (fingers crossed), and a kitchen kitted out with everything from a Nespresso pod machine to a proper Aga-style cooker. I could already picture us rustling up fish and chips takeaways from St Ives later.

The kids bolted straight for their room – bunk beds, naturally, which had them whooping like pirates claiming treasure. "This is better than home!" yelled Mia, flinging herself onto the duvet. Me and the missus claimed the master, with its en-suite and that unbeatable view of the waves crashing below. We cracked open a bottle of local Rattler cider (grabbed from the Co-op in Lelant on the way), and just stood there, taking it in. The sun was dipping low, painting the bay in pinks and oranges, and I felt this gentle pang of self-reflection – when did life get so hectic that staring at the sea feels like the height of luxury? Work emails pinging away on my phone felt a million miles from this spot.

First evening was all about settling in with simple pleasures. We wandered down the steep path to Carbis Bay Beach – all shingle and sand, with the tide pulling back to reveal rock pools teeming with crabs. The kids poked about with nets, getting soaked up to their knees, while I skimmed stones and pretended I was 10 again. A light drizzle threatened, but it cleared quick as you like, leaving that fresh sea air that smells of salt and freedom. Back at the lodge, chaos ensued: Ollie tipped sand from his trainers all over the rug, Mia demanded hot chocolate, and I burned the toast trying to work the toaster. Laugh-out-loud stuff, the kind that makes you grateful for lodge life over some stuffy hotel.

By bedtime, with the sound of gulls outside and the bay twinkling under streetlamps, I knew we'd nailed it. The Secret Seascape isn't flashy – it's that perfect hideaway for a family unwind, where first impressions stick because they're so effortlessly right. Can't wait to wake up to brekkie with a view tomorrow.
