About St Ives
I finally made it to Pink Sands after a bit of a faff on the drive down from upcountry. Picture this: I'd packed the car the night before, all smug with my playlist of sea shanties and a cool bag stuffed with pasties from the services. But no, halfway through Cornwall's twisty lanes, I managed to splatter half a thermos of tea across the dashboard because some cheeky pothole decided to ambush me. Nothing serious – just a soggy map and a mild swear – but it set the tone for the weekend: no rush, no drama, just me laughing at my own daftness as I pulled up to Carrack Widden in St Ives.

Pink Sands is one of those proper gems tucked away in a quiet nook overlooking the bay, the sort of place that whispers "slow down, mate" from the moment you spot it. It's a cosy little lodge, all whitewashed walls and pitched roof, with that classic Cornish charm that makes you feel like you've stumbled into a postcard. I arrived mid-afternoon on a Friday, the sun dipping low over the Atlantic, and as I lugged my bag up the path, the first wave of "ahh" hit me. No check-in queues, no key cards – just the key under the mat and a note from the owners saying "help yourself to the herbs in the garden." Bliss.

Stepping inside, it was like the world exhaled. The open-plan living space is compact but perfect: a squishy sofa piled with cushions, a wood burner (not needed yet, but eyeing it up for later), and a kitchenette that had everything from a cafetière to local gin waiting in the cupboard. Upstairs, the bedroom with its crisp white linens and sea-view window had me flopping straight onto the bed for a proper lie-down. First impressions? Pure hygge, but with a salty Cornish breeze sneaking through the cracks. I cracked open a window and could hear the gentle crash of waves down at Porthmeor Beach, not five minutes' wander away.

That first evening, I did bugger all, and it was glorious. Unpacked minimally, then straight out to the private patio with its bistro set and that unbeatable view across St Ives Bay. The garden's a riot of colour – lavender, fuchsias, and those herbs I mentioned – buzzing with bees and framed by the cliffs. I poured a GandT, cracked open my battered copy of a Poldark novel (cliché, I know, but it fits), and watched the fishing boats bob about as the sun turned the sea to molten gold. Dinner? A lazy rummage in the fridge for cheese, crackers, and some cherry tomatoes from the garden. No cooking frenzy, no faffing with recipes – just nibbling while the light faded, feeling the tension from the week melt away like clotted cream on a scone.

Saturday morning brought more of the same joy: waking to seagulls squawking (rude awakenings, but authentic), brewing tea in bed, and padding downstairs in my slippers. The lodge's vibe is all about nesting – that reading nook by the window became my throne, lost in a book while the harbour lights twinkled in the distance. Mid-morning, I fancied a gentle potter, so slipped on trainers for a slow amble down to the town. St Ives was buzzing softly – past the Tate St Ives with its modernist curves catching the light, round to the harbour where fishermen were mending nets and the air smelled of chips and seaweed. Grabbed a coffee from a hole-in-the-wall café, lingered on the beach watching dogs chase waves, then meandered back up the hill, picking up a pasty from a bakery because why not? No itinerary, no ticking boxes – just soaking it in, the cobblestones underfoot and the endless blue.

By Sunday, as I sat in the garden nursing another cuppa, scribbling in my notebook, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Life back home is all deadlines and doom-scrolling; here at Pink Sands, doing sweet FA felt revolutionary. It's not about grand adventures – it's the luxury of time stretching out, the simple thrill of a breeze-ruffled page or the horizon's curve. That insignificant tea spill on arrival? Best mishap ever – it reminded me to loosen up. Leaving felt criminal, but I'll be back for more of this nothing-much magic.
