About St Ives
I finally made it to St Ives after what felt like the world's most faffing-about drive down from Exeter, the SatNav insisting on taking us through every narrow Cornish lane imaginable. Picture this: me, my partner Jen, and our slightly bewildered spaniel, Monty, crammed into the car with half-eaten pasties shedding crumbs everywhere. We'd set off full of beans, dreaming of salty sea air and pasty perfection, but then disaster struck about ten miles out – or rather, a rogue seagull decided our windscreen was its personal bombing range. Splatter! I swerved like a pro (or so I told myself), but ended up pulling over in a layby near Hayle, frantically wiping it off with a pack of wet wipes while Jen laughed so hard she nearly dropped her phone. "Welcome to Cornwall," she gasped. Monty, oblivious, just snoozed on. Classic us – turning a straightforward journey into mild chaos.

By the time we trundled into St Ives proper, the sun was dipping low, painting the bay in that golden light you only get here. The town's a riot of colour even on a grey day – whitewashed cottages tumbling down to the sea, artists' galleries crammed with seascapes, and the scent of fish and chips wafting from every corner. We'd booked "Peaceful Pod With Bay Views" through a whim after seeing pics of its perch above Porthminster Beach, and as we navigated the steep, winding road up from the harbour (praying the handbrake would hold), my heart did a little flip. There it was: this cosy little pod, all tucked away like a hobbit hole with a massive wraparound window framing St Ives Bay. Views for days – you could see the curve of the coastline stretching out to Godrevy Lighthouse, waves crashing white against the rocks.

We parked up (another minor victory after that uphill scramble), and the host – a cheery local called Dave – greeted us with a wave and a thermos of tea. "Mind the step, loves," he said, handing over the keys. Stepping inside was like entering a hug. Compact but clever: a snug double bed piled with fluffy quilts, a kitchenette stocked with local treats (Cornish cider, anyone?), and that killer view right there through floor-to-ceiling glass. No telly, no distractions – just the sea whispering hello. Monty immediately claimed the woolly rug by the door, tail thumping, while Jen and I cracked open the biscuits and plonked on the sofa, mesmerised. The bay twinkled with little boats bobbing home, and in the distance, the lights of the town flickered on like fairy lights.

First impressions? Pure magic after our travel farce. We wandered out at dusk – it's only a ten-minute stroll down to Porthminster Beach, where the sand was still warm underfoot. Kids were paddling, couples strolling arm-in-arm, and the tide was pulling back to reveal rock pools glittering like jewels. Popped into a nearby pasty shop for supper (proper ones, with proper chunky beef – none of your supermarket rubbish), and ate them on a bench overlooking the harbour, seagulls circling hopefully. Jen teased me about my seagull phobia now fully cemented, and I had to laugh – here we were, smeared in pastry flakes again, but utterly content.

As night fell, we retreated to the pod, windows cracked to let in the waves' lullaby. Lying there, staring at the starry sky reflected in the bay, I had one of those quiet moments. Life's full of these silly mishaps – the bird bombs, the lost hours – but they make the good bits shine brighter. St Ives has that knack, doesn't it? In our little peaceful pod, with the world rushing below, I felt properly unwound for the first time in ages. If you're after a bolthole that feels like a secret, this is it. Can't wait to wake up to that view tomorrow.
