The batter was crisp as a Cornish dawn, wrapped in paper that steamed invitingly as we perched on the sea wall, watching trawlers unload the day’s catch. Gulls circled overhead – I kept my chips close.

St Ives unfolded like a postcard from there. Porthmeor Beach was our first dip, just a gentle wander away past galleries bursting with Turner-esque seascapes. The sand was golden, the waves Atlantic-fierce but forgiving, and the kids built lopsided castles while we lounged with pasties from the bakery round the corner. There’s something about that first toe in the water – cold as a witch’s nip, but invigorating. Back at the cottage by late afternoon, we flopped into the garden chairs, the sun dipping low over the rooftops. A bit of light mayhem ensued when the youngest discovered the stone-floored kitchen and decided to “help” with tea by juggling tomatoes. Splat. Cue parental eye-rolls and a hastily assembled ploughman’s from the local shop’s cheddar and pickle.

As the evening light faded, casting a rosy glow over the harbour, I had one of those quiet moments on the terrace. Sipping a local ale, listening to the distant clink of boats and the kids’ giggles echoing from inside, I reflected on how these simple stays ground you.
