About St Ives
I finally made it to Chy An Eglos after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Devon. Picture this: I'd packed the car the night before, all smug with my playlist of sea shanties and a cool bag stuffed with pasties from the services. But no, halfway through Cornwall's twisty lanes, my sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and directed me straight into a narrow farm track that ended in a muddy puddle. There I was, reversing like a pro (or so I told myself), splattered in Cornish clay, laughing at my own daftness while a farmer's dog barked encouragement from afar. A quick U-turn and 20 minutes later, I was trundling into Carbis Bay, heart lifting at the first glimpse of the sea.

Pulling up to Chy An Eglos felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. It's this proper cosy lodge, tucked into the hillside just a stone's throw from the beach, with Porthkidney Sands winking at you through the trees. I parked on the gravel drive, grabbed my bag, and let myself in – the key safe was a godsend after my navigational debacle. Stepping inside, the first impression was pure bliss: low-beamed ceilings, a wood burner begging for a lazy evening fire (even if it was June), and a kitchen that screamed "whip up a cuppa and forget the world". The sofa? Plump as a feather pillow, practically pulling me down for an immediate flop. I did exactly that, boots still on, staring out the window at the garden rolling down towards the bay. Cornwall's doing its thing – gulls wheeling, waves murmuring – and I'm already unwinding.

That first afternoon set the tone: doing bugger all, and loving every second. I pottered into the garden, a wild little haven of hydrangeas and lavender buzzing with bees. Found a hammock strung between two palms (well, sturdy shrubs), and there I swung, book in hand – some dog-eared Poldark novel I'd nabbed from the cottage shelf. The sun filtered through the leaves, and I must've dozed off because I woke with creases on my face and a grin a mile wide. No rush, no plans. Just the joy of slowing right down, letting the sea breeze do the heavy lifting on my stress levels.

Evening crept in soft and golden. I ambled down the path to Carbis Bay Beach – all of five minutes' stroll, flip-flops slapping on the warm sand. Picked up fish and chips from a beach hut van (crispy batter, mushy peas perfection), and carried them back to eat on the terrace as the tide turned. Sat there with a cold cider, watching families paddle and dogs chase frisbees, feeling that gentle pang of self-reflection. Back home, life's a treadmill – emails, deadlines, the lot. Here? I'm reminded how bloody good it feels to just be. No grand adventures needed; this quiet lapping of waves was adventure enough.

Next morning, same vibe. Brewed coffee in the sunlit kitchen, took it to the garden bench, and spent hours reading, occasionally wandering the flowerbeds like a contented gnome. Popped out for a gentle explore – down to the beach again, dipping toes in the cool Atlantic, then a meander along the coastal path towards the cliffs at low tide. St Ives twinkled in the distance, but I wasn't fussed about the trek; the pull was back to the lodge, that sofa calling my name. Light lunch of cheese and crackers, another chapter, a cheeky nap. It's the hammock lifestyle, innit? Pure, unadulterated loafing.

By day three's arrival haze – wait, no, that first impression lingered like a dream you don't want to wake from. Chy An Eglos isn't about ticking boxes; it's a cosy bolthole for recharging the soul. If you're after the thrill of doing sweet FA amid Cornwall's magic, this is your spot. I left with sand in my socks and a heart full, already plotting the next lazy escape.
