About St Ives
I finally made it to Carbis Bay Lodge after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Exeter – nothing major, just me spilling half my pasty over the dashboard at the Truro services, turning my lap into a soggy tribute to Cornwall's finest. Still chuckling about that as I pulled up to the lodge late afternoon on day one, the sun peeking through like it was testing the waters. St Ives was just a short stroll away, but this place? Proper gem. Tucked right on the edge of Carbis Bay beach, with those big windows framing the sea like a postcard. I dumped my bags, kicked off my trainers, and stepped out for a nose around, already buzzing for three days of proper coastal walking.

First impressions? Bliss. The lodge is one of those cosy stone cottages that screams "holiday hideaway" – think wooden beams, a cracking little patio overlooking the bay, and a kitchen stocked with all the essentials for brewing a proper cuppa. No faffing with check-in; the key safe made it seamless, and there I was, feet on the sand by 4pm. Carbis Bay beach stretched out golden and empty, waves lapping gently. Perfect for a gentle wander. I headed south along the sands towards the headland, the air that salty tang you only get down here. Barely half a mile in, and I'd spotted a seal bobbing about – or was it a bin lid? Either way, it had me grinning like an idiot.

But oh, British weather – never trust it further than you can throw it. Day two dawned bright as a button, blue skies begging for a hike up to St Ives. I laced up my boots and set off along the coast path from the lodge, that iconic stretch hugging the cliffs with views that make your jaw drop. Porthminster Beach shimmered below, surfers dotting the waves, and I powered on past the old lifeboat station, heart pumping. By the time I reached St Ives proper – all of a mile and a half away – the town was buzzing: pasty shops heaving, artists flogging their wares on the harbour wall. I grabbed a coffee from a beachfront hut, sat on the sea wall watching fishing boats chug in, feeling like I'd nailed the holiday vibe.

Then, classic Cornwall curveball. By noon, the clouds rolled in thicker than clotted cream, wind whipping up like it had a personal grudge. My grand plan for a full circuit back via Porthkidney Sands? Scrubbed. Instead, I ducked into a nook on the path, hood up, laughing at myself as rain pelted down. Adapted sharpish: a brisk yomp back to the lodge along the beach, dodging waves that were now proper feisty. Got soaked to the skin, but there was something brilliant about it – that raw, elemental Cornish energy. Cosied up in the lodge by early afternoon, towel-dried and steaming a mug of tea, I watched the storm rage over the bay from the lounge window. The place felt even more inviting then, all warm and dry while the world outside turned wild.

Day three, and the weather played nice again – misty morning giving way to sun. I couldn't resist another crack at the paths, this time a shorter loop from the lodge up to the Carbis Bay end of the bay, clifftops alive with gorse buzzing with bees. Spotted a few dog walkers and families paddling, but mostly solitude. The changing light was magic: one minute grey drizzle forcing a shelter under a rocky overhang, the next golden rays breaking through. It had me pausing for a proper think – you know, that gentle moment of reflection? Here I was, mid-forties, single, chasing these simple adventures instead of the usual grind. Spilling pasties and getting drenched suddenly felt like the best medicine. No grand plans needed; just legs moving, weather shifting, and this little lodge as home base.

Honestly, Carbis Bay Lodge nailed those first impressions – the perfect launchpad for St Ives' walking wonders, mishaps and all. If you're after that authentic Cornish coastal fix, book it. You won't regret getting your boots muddy.
