About Somerset
I finally made it to Withypool Lodge after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Taunton. Picture this: I'm humming along the A361, windows down, dreaming of Exmoor air, when—splat!—a rogue pheasant decides to audition for my windscreen. Nothing dramatic, just a feathery thwack and a comedy blur of tail feathers. Heart in mouth, I pulled over near the lodge's turning, checked for damage (none, phew), and laughed it off as a proper Somerset welcome. Ten minutes later, I'm crunching up the gravel drive to this cracking stone cottage, tucked away in a quiet spot just outside Taunton, with rolling fields begging to be explored.

First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. Withypool Lodge is one of those proper Exmoor gems—cosy, characterful, with a wood-burner begging for a fire and views that stretch out like a postcard. I dumped my bags, brewed a cuppa, and stepped out the back door into what promised to be a three-day ramble heaven. Somerset's on my doorstep back home, but staying here felt like slipping into a slower pace, away from the daily grind. The air was crisp, that fresh moorland tang, and I was itching to lace up my boots for some proper walks.

Day one kicked off with blue skies—rare as hen's teeth in these parts—so I headed straight out for the Quantock Hills, just a short tramp away. The path from the lodge winds up through bracken and gorse, sheep eyeing me suspiciously as I puff uphill. It's gentle at first, then proper undulating, with views over the Vale of Taunton that make you forget the world. I picnicked on a hillock, cheese sarnie in hand, feeling like king of the castle. Light-hearted skip in my step, I even tried a daft jog down a slope, only to trip on a tussock and end up arse-over-tit in the heather. Solo belly laugh echoed for miles—no one to witness but the ponies.

But oh, British weather, you capricious sod. By afternoon, the clouds rolled in like uninvited guests, turning my planned loop around the Black Down ridge into a misty dodge-em. Rain started as a cheeky drizzle, then proper sheeted down, soaking me to the bone. Plans for a full evening hike? Scrubbed. I scarpered back to the lodge, mud-caked boots trailing across the kitchen tiles, and lit that wood-burner with glee. Cosied up with a towel and a hot toddy, I watched the downpour lash the windows, feeling oddly content. It's these curveballs that make it, innit? Forces you to savour the shelter, the steam from the kettle, the simple joy of dry socks.

Day two dawned grey and grumpy, wind howling like a banshee. Undeterred, I layered up for a shorter jaunt along the River Tone paths nearby—flat, lush, with herons flapping lazily overhead. The weather played nice for half an hour, birdsong filling the air, before the heavens opened again. I ducked under an oak, hood up, giggling at the absurdity as hailstones pinged off my cagoule. Changed plans mid-stride: looped back early, swapped the hike for a fireside read and a cheeky nap. Reflection hit me then, staring into the flames—life's too rushed sometimes. Here, with the weather calling the shots, I realised slowing down isn't faffing about; it's the point. No Instagram perfection, just me, the mud, and the moment.

By day three, a watery sun peeked out, teasing one last hurrah: a breezy clifftop wander on the Quantocks' edge, rainbow arcing over the sea haze. Weather wins again, cutting it short with a squall, but what a way to sign off. Withypool Lodge didn't just host my soggier-than-planned adventure—it wrapped it in that unpretentious Somerset charm. If you're after walks that flex with the skies and a base that feels like home, get yourself here. I'll be back, pheasants permitting.
