About Somerset
Pulling up to Whileaway, I was chuffed to bits. It's one of those picture-perfect holiday lets: stone-built with a thatched roof, flower baskets tumbling over the porch, and a private hot tub peeking round the back. Inside, it smelled of fresh linen and woodsmoke, with a compact kitchen that screamed "get cooking, you lot." No sprawling mansion, mind—just right for one or a couple, with a snug lounge, a comfy king-size bed upstairs, and French doors opening onto a deck with views of the Mendips. First impressions? Bliss. I dumped my bags and headed straight for the local farm shop just a stone's throw away in the park itself—Strawberryfield's got its own, stocked with punnet after punnet of fat, juicy Somerset strawberries, even out of season thanks to some clever polytunnels. Right, priorities: scran. I'd planned a proper feast to christen the place, so I stocked up on local bits—Cheddar cheese (obviously, from the caves a couple of miles off, creamy and crumbly), crusty bread from the village bakery, and a slab of bacon from Sedgemoor porkers. Cooking in that kitchen was a doddle; the hob fired up instantly, and I rustled up a massive ploughman's for lunch, slathered with pickle and washed down with a pint of Exmoor Ale from the fridge. Sat out on the deck, munching away, I couldn't help chuckling at myself—me, the city lad who burns toast, slicing cheese like a pro. It felt dead authentic, like I'd stumbled into a Proper Somerset Stay ad. Evening rolled in, and I fancied a pub crawl without straying far. The park's dead handy for Cheddar's locals—first stop, The White Hart, a five-minute drive down the hill. Proper old-school boozer with beams, a roaring fire, and punters nursing pints of Butcombe. I went for the pie of the day—steak and ale, flaky pastry, chips fat as fingers—and it was smashing, proper belly-fillers after the drive. Chatted to a couple of locals about the strawberry harvest; turns out the fields around us supply half the county's jams. Back at the lodge by nine, I cracked open a bottle of Somerset cider (scrumped from an orchard nearby, they said) and attempted pancakes for pud. Disaster! First batch stuck like glue—too much enthusiasm, not enough oil—but the second lot, drowned in strawberry compote from the farm shop, were a triumph. Laughed my head off scraping the pan, glass of cider in hand. Next morning, first impressions deepened over brekkie. Brewed a pot of builder's tea, fried up eggs from the farm shop (hens just down the lane, yolks like sunsets) with that bacon, and scoffed it gazing at the mist-cloaked hills. Wandered back to the shop for more—fresh scones, clotted cream thicker than my accent, and a loaf of Bara Brith for elevenses. Self-reflection hit me then, mid-bite: sat there in my fluffy robe, no emails pinging, just the simple joy of faffing about with food in this gem of a lodge. When did I last switch off like that? Work's a treadmill; this was reset button perfection. By day three's lunch, I'd nailed a full English with black pudding from the butcher's van that parks up weekly—greasy spoon heaven on my own plate. Pub lunch at The Rockford House followed, fish and chips crisp as autumn leaves, with mushy peas that transported me straight to childhood holidays. Every meal wove in local flavours: strawberries in everything, Cheddar on toast, cider with every course. Whileaway Lodge isn't just a base; it's a foodie's haven, turning arrivals into instant gourmands. If you're after first impressions that stick like clotted cream, this is your spot. Can't wait to go back. |
