About Somerset
I finally made it to Valley View after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Bristol. I'd set off full of beans, playlist blasting some classic Britpop, but about 20 minutes in, I managed to spill my entire flask of tea all over the passenger seat. Classic me—rushing to beat the traffic, forgetting the lid wasn't on properly. By the time I pulled up to the cottage in Shepton Mallet, my car smelt like a soggy teabag factory, and I was already plotting how to air it out without the hosts noticing. Still, as I crunched up the gravel drive, the sight of Valley View wiped the grin off my face—in the best way.

Perched on the edge of the Mendip Hills, this little stone cottage looked like it had been plucked straight from a postcard. Low-beamed ceilings, a cosy wood burner (not yet lit, mind), and those massive windows framing the rolling valleys below. I dumped my bags, brewed a fresh cuppa—properly this time—and stepped out for my first proper gander. The air was crisp, that proper Somerset freshness with a hint of damp earth, and the sun was peeking through the clouds like it was teasing me. Perfect for a hike, I thought. Valley View's right on the doorstep of some cracking trails, so I laced up my boots and headed out along the nearby footpath towards Ebbor Gorge, just a couple of miles off.

First morning, the weather was playing nice—blue skies, a gentle breeze rustling the hedgerows. I followed the path snaking through limestone outcrops, past sleepy farms with cows eyeing me lazily over stone walls. The views were mental: undulating green hills stretching out, dotted with the odd ancient oak. I felt like I'd wandered into a Tolkien novel, minus the hobbits. Stopped for a breather at a viewpoint overlooking the gorge—proper dramatic, with its rocky cliffs plunging down. Laughed to myself when a cheeky robin hopped over, probably expecting a biscuit. That walk was pure bliss, about five miles round trip, and I was back at the cottage by lunch, cheeks flushed, ready to crack open a pasty from the local shop in Shepton.

But oh, British weather, you fickle friend. Afternoon rolled in with a vengeance—grey skies turned biblical, lashing rain that turned the paths to mudslides. My grand plan for an evening stroll to the nearby woods? Scrubbed. Instead, I hunkered down by the window, watching the downpour drum on the panes like an impatient drummer. It was almost comical, how quickly the landscape shifted from vibrant green to a misty watercolour. I improvised with a shorter loop around the cottage grounds, dodging puddles the size of ponds, my wellies squelching like they'd got a comedy routine going. Slipped once on a slick slope—nothing major, just enough to send me arse-over-tit into a bush. Emerged laughing, covered in brambles, feeling like a right plonker. But that's the joy of it, innit? No itinerary, just you and the elements.

Day two dawned misty, the Mendips shrouded in fog like a scene from a Brontë novel. Undeterred, I ventured out for a clifftop hike along the escarpment trails nearby—shorter this time, maybe three miles, weaving through gorse and wildflowers. The fog lifted in patches, revealing glimpses of the valley floor, all patchwork fields and winding streams. Weather flipped again mid-stride: sun burst through, turning everything golden, only for a sneaky shower to chase me back. I timed it perfectly, ducking under a massive oak just as the heavens opened. Sat there dripping, munching a flapjack, reflecting on how these hikes mirror life a bit—plans go tits up, but you adapt, find the rhythm.

By the third morning, I'd nailed the Valley View vibe: brew up, check the sky, hit the trails. A quick jaunt to the local common, rain holding off just long enough for me to spot a buzzard soaring overhead. Back at the cottage, sodden but satisfied, I gazed out those windows again. Three days of weather-whipped walks had me properly hooked on Somerset's wild side. Who needs far-flung adventures when you've got this on your doorstep? If you're after a proper reset, Valley View's your spot—tea stains and all.
