About Somerset
Pulling up to the lodge, I was smitten straight away. It's one of those proper cosy hideaways – a quaint wooden lodge tucked into a peaceful spot, all low beams and stone floors, with French doors spilling out onto a private garden that feels like your own little Eden. The sun was dipping low as I arrived, casting that golden Somerset glow over everything, and I just stood there for a minute, breathing in the fresh air laced with wildflowers and distant farmyard whiffs. No traffic hum, no notifications pinging – just birdsong and the faint rustle of leaves. After wrestling my bag inside (and spilling a bit of tea from my travel mug in the process – another minor mishap for the tally), I flopped onto the squishy sofa with a cuppa, gazing out at the garden. It was lush and wildish, with a patio perfect for lounging, bird feeders dangling like invitations to watch the feathered locals dart about. That first evening set the tone: pure, unadulterated laziness. I unpacked a stack of books I'd been meaning to crack for months – a dog-eared copy of Farthing Wood adventures, because why not embrace the stoat theme? – and lost myself in pages while the kettle whistled for endless refills. The lodge's kitchen was a dream for minimal effort: everything you need without the faff, so I rustled up cheese on toast and called it gourmet. Outside, the garden beckoned for a gentle potter. I discovered a hammock strung between apple trees (proper Bramleys, heavy with promise), and there I swung, half-dozing as the evening cooled. It's funny how something so simple hits different when you're away from the grind – no agenda, no guilt, just the joy of swaying and letting thoughts drift like the clouds overhead. The next morning dawned misty, classic Somerset style, and I embraced the sluggish start with a fry-up in my PJs. No rush to conquer peaks or tick off sights; instead, I ambled out to explore on foot, keeping it local to that five-mile bubble. A short stroll took me along quiet lanes to the nearby RSPB Greylake reserve – wellies optional, binoculars in hand – where I watched lapwings swoop over reed beds, feeling like I'd stumbled into a David Attenborough outtake. Back at the lodge by lunch, it was more garden time: sprawling on a lounger with a flask of coffee, eavesdropping on the woodpeckers hammering away. Light humour in the air too – I tried "helping" by scattering seeds, only to attract a cheeky robin gang that dive-bombed me like feathered muggers. Laughed till my sides hurt, then retreated inside for a nap on the window seat, book forgotten. By day three, that gentle rhythm had worked its magic. Sat in the garden with a pasty from the local shop (proper Cornish pasty vibes, even if we're in Somerset), I had one of those quiet moments of self-reflection. Life back home's a whirlwind of deadlines and doom-scrolling, but here, achieving nowt felt like the ultimate win. Stoat Lodge isn't about grand adventures; it's a love letter to lingering – reading till your eyes blur, savouring the silence, letting Somerset's soft landscapes seep into your bones. As I packed up that final afternoon, reluctant as anything, I promised myself more of this. Sometimes, the best holiday is the one where you do sweet FA and love every lazy minute. |
