About Somerset
I finally made it to Pippin Lodge in Glastonbury after what felt like the scenic route from hell—well, more like the scenic route via a wrong turn into a muddy farm track. Picture this: I'm trundling along in my little hatchback, sat-nav chirping away about "recalculating" every five minutes, when I spot a sign for Glastonbury Tor and think, "Ooh, shortcut!" Big mistake. Next thing I know, I'm bogged down in a puddle the size of a small pond, wheels spinning like a hamster on steroids. Thank goodness for the friendly farmer who turned up with his tractor—five minutes later, I'm towed out, caked in mud up to my knees, laughing at my own daftness. "Welcome to Somerset," I mutter, wiping sludge off the windscreen.

By the time I pull up to Pippin Lodge, just a stone's throw from Glastonbury's quirky high street, the sun's dipping low, painting everything in that golden Somerset glow. The lodge is tucked away in a peaceful spot, surrounded by rolling fields and those classic hedgerows that make you feel like you've stumbled into a postcard. It's one of those proper cosy cottages—stone-built, with a thatched roof that screams "traditional Mendip charm." I park up, grab my bags, and fumble with the key under the porch light. The door swings open, and blimey, it's even better than the photos.

Stepping inside, the first thing that hits me is the wood-burning stove in the lounge, already laid with kindling and a basket of logs—proper thoughtful touch after my muddy ordeal. The room's all warm neutrals, plump sofas begging for a collapse, and a telly above the fireplace for rainy evenings (though fingers crossed for sun). I dump my bags and make a beeline for the kitchen—shiny Aga cooker, fully stocked with everything from cafetière to quirky mugs painted with Glastonbury vibes. I brew a quick cuppa, strong as you like, and that's when the magic really sinks in. Through the window, I spy the private hot tub bubbling away on the deck, steam rising into the twilight. "Hello, you," I say, already plotting a soak.

Upstairs, the bedrooms are a dream—king-size bed piled high with fluffy duvets in the main room, views straight out to the garden where birds are flitting about. The en-suite's got a rainfall shower that could wash away a week's worth of city stress, and there's even a cheeky little balcony for morning coffee with a side of countryside air. I flop onto the bed for a minute, staring at the beams overhead, and have one of those gentle "what am I doing with my life?" moments. Back home, it's all deadlines and tube delays; here, it's birdsong and no signal if I want it. Why do I wait so long between these escapes?

Wandering back down, I fire up the stove—matches at the ready, flames crackling to life. Dinner's simple: local bread and cheese from the farm shop I'd spotted en route (post-mishap detour paid off), scoffed at the dining table with its vase of fresh wildflowers. Outside, the garden's a riot of lavender and herbs, fenced snugly so no nosy neighbours, just me, the stars popping out over the Tor silhouette, and that hot tub calling louder than a pub on Friday night. I slip in fully clothed first (mud paranoia), then properly stripped off, bubbles fizzing around me as the chaos of the drive melts away. Somerset's got me hooked already—peaceful, quirky, and utterly unpretentious. Three days here? Can't come soon enough.
