About Somerset
I finally made it to Orchard Lodge after what felt like the scenic route from Bristol, our little Fiesta chugging along those twisty Somerset lanes like it was auditioning for a Top Gear mishap. Picture this: we'd packed the boot with enough crisps, cheese, and cider to feed a small village, only for me to realise halfway there that I'd left the kids' wellies back home. Typical me—rushing off without a backward glance, dreaming of cream teas while the rain clouds gathered like they knew we were Somerset-bound. A quick detour to a Cheddar village shop sorted it (rubber boots for a fiver, bargain), but by the time we trundled into Strawberryfield Park, we were all giggling at the chaos. Orchard Lodge sat there waiting, a cosy chocolate-box cottage nestled among strawberry fields that stretched out like a promise of lazy summer days, even if ours were more autumnal and drizzly.

Pulling up on the gravel drive, I felt that instant holiday hit—the kind where the world shrinks to the size of your front door. The lodge is proper quaint, all stone walls and a thatched roof that makes you think of Enid Blyton tales, but with modern perks like a hot tub bubbling away out back. We tumbled out, bags flying, kids whooping as they dashed to explore the decked terrace. "Mum, it's got a BBQ!" yelled little Ollie, age eight and already plotting sausage dreams. I unlocked the door with that satisfying click, and whoosh—inside was pure lodge bliss. Low-beamed ceilings, a wood-burner begging for logs, and a kitchen that screamed "whip up a fry-up here." The living room sofa looked comfier than our one at home, piled with cushions in soft checks and florals. I plonked down for a sec, breathing in that new-holiday smell of fresh linen and possibility.

First impressions? Spot on for a family unwind. The bedrooms were a treat—ours with a kingsize bed that swallowed us whole, and the kids' twin room overlooking the fields, where they immediately claimed the en-suite as their "secret lair." (Pro tip: hide the fancy shower gels unless you want a bubbly flood.) We cracked open the welcome pack—local apple juice, shortbread, and a map scribbled with nearby gems like the Cheddar Gorge caves, just a stone's throw away. No need to venture far; this spot's all about that chilled vibe, with play areas dotted around the park for the little ones to burn off travel energy.

As the afternoon light slanted golden through the windows, we fired up the kettle for a proper cuppa, dunking Hobnobs while plotting nothing much. That's when the lodge chaos kicked in—gentle, mind. I went to hang our coats and yanked the wardrobe door too hard; it swung back and clonked me on the noggin. "Oi, watch it!" I laughed, rubbing my head as the family piled in for a group hug. Silly mishap, but it summed up the joy: unpretentious, lived-in fun. Sitting there later, feet up, watching the kids chase each other round the garden (complete with a cheeky robin eyeing our crumbs), I had a quiet moment of reflection. Life back home's a whirlwind of school runs and deadlines, but here, in this little Somerset haven, it all paused. No screens, just us, the rustle of leaves, and the faint hum of contentment. Orchard Lodge didn't just welcome us; it wrapped us in that simple magic of family time, mishaps and all. If you're after a relaxed break where the biggest decision is tea or coffee, this is your spot. Can't wait to return.
