About Somerset
First impressions? Blimey, what a stunner. This shepherd's hut-style retreat sits perched on the edge of the park, all rustic charm with its curved roof and wooden deck that screams "relaxation station." I arrived mid-afternoon on a Friday, rain lashing the windscreen like it had a personal grudge. Unloading my bags in a downpour, I dashed inside, dripping like a drowned rat, and was greeted by the hut's warm embrace—compact but ever so inviting, with a snug double bed piled high with quilts, a wee kitchenette stocked for brekkie, and a log burner begging for a match. The views from the window? Straight out to the Mendip Hills, misty and mysterious under the grey skies. I couldn't wait to get out and explore on foot. Day one was all about acclimatising with a gentle wander around the park itself. The weather held off just long enough for me to lace up my boots and meander the trails right on Deer Leap's doorstep—rolling fields dotted with wildflowers, the air thick with that earthy Somerset scent after rain. I spotted a few fellow holidaymakers strolling with dogs, everyone exchanging cheery nods despite the drizzle threatening. But by evening, the clouds proper rolled in, turning my planned sunset hike into a mug of tea by the burner instead. Sat there toasting marshmallows (they even provide the sticks!), I chuckled at my soggy socks drying on the radiator. Proper British holiday vibes. Come Saturday morning, I was up with the lark, determined to conquer the nearby cliffs. Cheddar Gorge is literally a ten-minute plod away—those dramatic limestone crags rising like nature's own cathedral. The forecast promised "bright intervals," so off I went, armed with a thermos of coffee and high spirits. The initial ascent up the Gorge's stepped path was magic: birdsong echoing off the rocks, gnarled trees clinging to sheer faces, and that fresh post-rain sparkle on the puddles. I paused at the lookout points, munching a flapjack, feeling like I'd stumbled into a Tolkien set. But oh, the weather—classic Somerset switcheroo. Halfway up Jacob's Ladder, a biblical deluge hit. Wind whipping, rain horizontal, I hunkered down under a rocky overhang, hood up, laughing at the absurdity. "This is why we pack waterproofs," I told myself, channelling my inner Bear Grylls (minus the beard). By the time I scrambled back down, sodden but exhilarated, the sun peeked out, turning the valley into a shimmering green paradise. I rewarded myself with fish and chips from the village (Cheddar's got a cracking chippy), eaten on Deer Leap's deck as the clouds parted. That evening, cosy inside with the patter of rain on the roof again, I reflected on how these unpredictable walks mirror life a bit—plans go awry, but the detours bring the best stories. No grand adventures planned for day three yet, but with the Mendips calling and more weather whims ahead, I'm buzzing for whatever the morrow brings. Deer Leap's got me hooked; Somerset's wild heart is the perfect playground for a rambler's soul. |
