About Somerset
I finally made it to that cosy 1 Bed Lodge in Masbury after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Bristol. Picture this: I'm humming along the A37, dreaming of pasties and pints, when I realise I've left my phone charger at home. Proper numpty moment—had to pull into a layby near Shepton Mallet and rig up some dodgy USB contraption from the glovebox. Laughable really, but it set the tone for a weekend of proper Somerset indulgence, all centred on scoffing and supping within spitting distance of the lodge.

Pulling up to the place just after lunch on Friday, I was starving. The lodge sits tucked away in that lush Mendip countryside, dead quiet except for the odd bird cheeping. First impressions? Bliss. It's this quaint one-bed setup, perfect for a solo jaunt or a sneaky couple's getaway—wooden beams, a cracking little kitchenette, and a view over rolling fields that screams "put the kettle on." But let's be honest, I wasn't there for the scenery; I was there to eat like a king on holiday. I'd stocked the boot with bits from Shepton Mallet's market that morning—fresh sourdough, local cheddar from the farm stalls, and a punnet of strawberries that tasted like summer in a bowl.

Unpacked in ten minutes flat, and straight into lunch prep. Whipped up a ploughman's in the lodge's dinky kitchen: thick slices of that cheddar, Branston pickle I'd nicked from the fridge (cheers, hosts), and some apple chutney from a nearby producer. Sat out on the patio with a cuppa, munching away, feeling dead chuffed. The air's so fresh here, every bite hits different. Masbury's spot on for this—minutes from Downside, where you've got those proper village shops flogging cream teas and pasties. No faffing about with far-flung drives; everything's on your doorstep.

By teatime, I was itching for a pub crawl—well, more of a pub waddle, given the calories. The nearest gem is The Masbury Inn, a stone's throw up the lane. Proper old-school boozer with low ceilings and a fire crackling. Ordered the Somerset cider (Thatchers, natch) and their steak and ale pie—flaky pastry, tender beef swimming in gravy that could make you weep. Chatted with the locals about the Mendip weather (rain imminent, as per usual), and it felt like slipping into a warm bath. Back at the lodge by dusk, I attempted a spot of cooking: bacon sarnies with eggs from the farm shop in Shepton. Burnt the first batch—lesson learned, don't multitask with Netflix—but the second lot? Perfection, wolfed down with a cheeky bottle of local scrumpy.

Saturday morning kicked off with a fry-up disaster that had me in stitches. I'd grabbed sausages and black pudding from the butcher's in nearby Oakhill—proper meaty beauties—but the lodge's hob decided to play hard to get. Ended up with a lopsided tower of grease and glory, eaten cross-legged on the sofa while rain pattered the windows. Laugh out loud, innit? Ventured out mid-morning to Shepton Mallet's Friday market (worth the five-minute drive), haggling for pork pies and eccles cakes. Bargain heaven—filled a bag for £10 and scarpered back for elevenses.

Afternoon was pub lunch at The Good Intent in Downside, where the fish and chips were battered to crispy heaven, served with mushy peas and a side of banter from the barman. Washed it down with Otter Ale, feeling that holiday glow. Evening? Back in the lodge for a "gourmet" attempt: pasta with wild garlic pesto from the market (foraged local vibes) and a slab of blue cheese melting on top. Simple, smashing, and zero washing up stress.

Sunday brunch wrapped my first-impressions feast: avocado on toast (fancy, me?) with poached eggs and bacon rashers, courtesy of the Friday haul. Sat reflecting over coffee—me, usually a city rushabout, faffing in a kitchen and loving it. Turns out, a weekend of Masbury munchies was just what the doctor ordered. If you're after a food-focused Somerset pitstop, this lodge is your spot. Proper lush.
