About Porthleven
I finally made it to Porthleven after what felt like the scenic route from hell, thanks to my sat-nav deciding to play silly buggers halfway through Cornwall. Picture this: I'm trundling along those narrow, hedge-lined lanes in my little hire car, windows down, proper sea air whipping in, when the bloody thing beeps and redirects me down a farm track that dead-ends at a field full of suspiciously curious cows. There I am, reversing like a learner driver, swearing under my breath while a couple of locals in a Land Rover give me that classic Cornish side-eye. Classic me – always managing to turn a straightforward drive into a comedy of errors. But hey, it was only a ten-minute detour, and by the time I spotted the sea glinting over the rooftops of Porthleven, all was forgiven.

Pulling into the car park at Wheal Rose Lodge, right on the edge of the village with those smashing harbour views, I was already grinning like an idiot. The lodge itself is one of those dreamy stone cottages that scream "proper Cornish getaway" – think whitewashed walls, a thatched roof that looks like it's been there since smuggling days, and flower baskets tumbling over the front door. It's part of a little cluster, but Wheal Rose feels like your own private bolthole, tucked just back from the harbour wall. I grabbed my bags, fumbled the key code (nerves, innit?), and stepped inside to the smell of fresh linen and that faint, welcoming tang of the sea.

First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. The open-plan living space is cosy without being cramped – a squishy sofa piled with cushions facing a wood burner (not lit yet, but I could already imagine rainy evenings in), and a kitchen that's kitted out like a telly chef's dream: granite worktops, a proper Aga-style cooker, and even a Nespresso machine for my caffeine emergencies. I dumped my stuff and made straight for the bifold doors leading to the patio – and there it was, the full Porthleven panorama. The harbour below, boats bobbing gently, surfers eyeing up the waves at the beach, and that massive inner sea wall standing guard against the Atlantic like a grumpy bouncer. On a good day like today, the sun was bouncing off the water, turning everything golden.

I couldn't resist a wander down to the harbour path – it's literally a two-minute stroll from the lodge. Popped into the RNLI station for a nosey (always good to know where the heroes hang out), then grabbed a pasty from the Kafe Kernewek right by the quay. Sat on a bench munching it, watching the fishing boats unload their catch while gulls wheeled overhead. Proper job – flaky pastry, chunky beef, and not a soggy bottom in sight. Back at the lodge, I cracked open a tin from the well-stocked welcome basket (local cider, cheers!) and flopped on the patio chair, feet up, just soaking it in. The garden's a riot of colour too – lavender, hydrangeas nodding in the breeze – and it's so private, you feel miles away from the world, even though the village hum is just audible.

As the sun dipped lower, painting the sky in those mad pinks and oranges that Cornwall does so well, I had one of those quiet moments. Sat there with my cider, staring out at the waves crashing on the breakwater, and thought, "You daft sod, why don't you do this more often?" Work, life, the usual bollocks – it all felt a million miles away. That little mishap on the drive? Forgotten already. Wheal Rose Lodge had worked its magic in under an hour, wrapping me in that perfect mix of comfort and wild coastal vibe. Three days here? Can't come soon enough.
