About Porthleven
I finally made it to Porthleven after what felt like the scenic route from hell, thanks to my sat-nav deciding to play silly buggers halfway through. Picture this: I'm trundling along those narrow Cornish lanes, windows down, Proper Cornish pasty in hand from a quick stop in Helston, when the bloody thing pipes up, "Turn left in 200 yards." Left? Onto a single-track path barely wider than my Fiat, hemmed in by hedges taller than me on a good day. I panic, clip a verge with my wing mirror – crunch – and end up reversing into a gateway while a local farmer in a Land Rover eyes me like I've just insulted his prize heifer. "First time, luv?" he chuckles, helping me untangle. Classic me, turning a 20-minute drive into a comedy of errors. But hey, no real damage, just a scratched ego and a story to tell.

By the time I rolled into Porthleven, the sun was dipping low over Mount's Bay, painting the sea that electric blue you only get in Cornwall. The village unfolded like a postcard – that iconic harbour crammed with fishing boats bobbing gently, the beach curving away with surfers dotted about like seals in wetsuits. I was knackered but buzzing, following the signs to Towans Retreat, tucked away in a quiet spot just a stone's throw from the action. It's one of those proper seaside cottages, all whitewashed stone and slate roof, the sort that screams "cosy hideaway" without trying too hard. I parked up on the gravel drive – mercifully wide enough for my error-prone driving – and hauled my bags out, inhaling that salty tang mixed with chippy aromas wafting from the high street.

Stepping inside was like a warm hug from an old mate. The door creaked open to a lounge that's pure charm: low-beamed ceiling, a squishy sofa piled with cushions begging you to flop down, and a wood burner already set with kindling (genius, as the evening chill was creeping in). Kitchen's a dream for lazy holiday cooking – Belfast sink, Aga humming away, and a retro Smeg fridge stocked with local milk and eggs from the hosts. I cracked open a tin of sardines (Porthleven's own tinned treasures, naturally) and munched by the window, watching the last surfers catch waves at the beach below. The view! Straight out to the Atlantic, with the lighthouse on the headland winking like it knew I'd arrived.

First impressions? Blown away. After the arrival faff, it felt like the universe was making up for it. I wandered down to the harbour in the twilight – five minutes on foot – dodging gulls squabbling over fish guts from the day boats. The Bickford-Smith Institute clock tower loomed friendly-like, and I grabbed a pint at the harbour pub, where locals yarned about the morning's swell. Back at the retreat, I lit that fire (no disasters there, phew), curled up with a book, and let the day's chaos melt. Sat there staring into the flames, I had one of those quiet moments – you know, the kind where you realise life's little mishaps are just the seasoning that makes the good bits taste better. Three days ahead in this gem of a spot, and already I was smitten. Porthleven had me hooked from the off, mirror mishap and all.
