About Porthleven
First impressions? Bloody marvellous. The cottage is proper cosy, the sort of place that screams "relax, you've earned this". We tumbled through the door – me, the wife, and our two under-tens – bags everywhere, sandy trainers marking the slate floor before we'd even unpacked. It's one of those classic Cornish spots: low-beamed ceilings that make you duck if you're over six foot (guilty), a wood-burner already stocked with kindling, and windows framing the wild sea crashing against the harbour wall. You can hear the waves from the kitchen, which is tiny but brilliant, with a retro Aga that I immediately set about burning toast on. Chaos from the off, but the good kind – kids raiding the welcome hamper of local scones and clotted cream while I faffed with the kettle. That first evening, we wandered down the steep lane to the beach, all of five minutes' stroll, flip-flops flapping on the cobbles. Porthleven's harbour was buzzing in that understated Cornish way: fishing boats bobbing, a few surfers hauling boards back from the waves, and the air thick with salt and chippy smells from the quayside. We grabbed fish and chips from the hut by the water – proper batter, flaky cod, mushy peas that the littlest demolished – and ate them on the pebbles, dodging the incoming tide. The kids built a wonky sandcastle that promptly got flattened by a cheeky wave, sending them into hysterics. I laughed along, but secretly loved the simplicity: no screens, no schedules, just us and the sea doing its thing. Next morning, waking to gull cries and that fresh sea mist rolling in, St Just felt even more like home. The lounge is a suntrap, with squishy sofas perfect for lounging over coffee, watching the harbour mouth where massive swells funnel in – proper dramatic, like nature's own blockbuster. We pottered about the garden patio, which clings to the cliff and has this mad view straight out to Loe Bar, that shingle spit closing off the lagoon. Brewed up some tea (Yorkshire, naturally), slathered jam on those scones, and let the morning drift. The kids discovered the board games in the cupboard – a dusty Monopoly set that ended in tears over Mayfair – while I nipped out for a solo walk along the coastal path. Breath of fresh air, literally; lungs full of ozone, mind emptying of work woes. It's funny how a place like this sneaks up on you. Sat there on the patio that second afternoon, feet up, listening to the wife and kids giggling inside over some daft card game, I had a proper moment. Life's been a whirlwind lately – jobs, school runs, the usual grind – and here we were, doing nowt but breathing it all in. No grand plans, just the rhythm of tides and the odd pasty from the village bakery. St Just isn't flashy; it's got that lived-in charm, with creaky stairs and a shower that runs scalding then cold (pro tip: patience is key). But that's the magic – a bit of lodge life chaos amid the calm. By day three's end, as we watched the sunset paint the harbour gold, I was already plotting our return. Porthleven's got under our skin, and St Just? She's family now. |
