About Porthleven
I finally made it to Porthleven after a faff-filled drive down from Camborne, the SatNav insisting on a scenic detour that added an extra half-hour of narrow lanes and one hilarious moment where I accidentally reversed into a hedge while trying to let a tractor past. Chips of Cornwall's finest greenery still clinging to the bumper, I thought, "Welcome to the holiday chaos—might as well embrace it!" Pulling up to St Ives Lodge 3 Spa just on the edge of the village, I was knackered but buzzing. This little gem, tucked away in a quiet spot overlooking the rolling fields towards the sea, promised the perfect family unwind, and from the off, it delivered.

The lodge itself is a proper cosy haven—think chocolate-box cottage vibes with a modern spa twist that had me grinning like a kid at Christmas. We arrived mid-afternoon on a drizzly Cornish day, the sort that makes you crave a brew, and as I fumbled the key code (second mishap of the day—turns out I can't punch numbers under pressure), the kids were already dashing about, claiming their bunk beds inside. Stepping through the door, the first whiff was of fresh linen and that faint sea salt tang drifting in from the open windows. It's compact but clever, with a lounge that screams "plonk down and chill"—plump sofas, a telly for rainy evenings, and a wood burner begging for a fire later. The kitchen was a dream for lazy family meals: fully kitted out with everything from cafetière to toaster, though I did eye the dishwasher with suspicion after my history of loading disasters.

What hit me straight away was the spa setup—blimey, talk about luxury in miniature! A private hot tub bubbled away on the decking, steam rising like a siren's call against the grey sky, and next to it, a sleek sauna that looked like it could melt away a year's worth of work stress. The kids, aged 8 and 10, were straight in, splashing about with whoops of joy while I dipped a toe, giggling at how the jets turned my feet into prune-city in seconds. "Dad, you're turning into a lobster!" my youngest yelled, and I couldn't argue—nothing like a bit of lodge life chaos to remind you life's too short for stiff upper lips. We cranked up some tunes on the Bluetooth speaker, sipping fizz (mocktail version for the nippers), watching the mist roll in from Porthleven's harbour just a short stroll away.

First impressions? Pure bliss wrapped in that unpretentious Cornish charm. The decking wraps around the lodge, giving cracking views over the fields—on a clear patch, you catch glimpses of the Atlantic crashing in, but even on this moody day, it felt magical. We wandered down to the village green after settling in, grabbing pasties from the local bakery (proper job, flaky pastry and all), and mooched along the harbour wall where fishing boats bobbed like they were in their own lazy dance. Porthleven's that perfect pocket of calm—whitewashed cottages, the hum of the Harbour Inn spilling out chatter, and seals occasionally popping up like nosy neighbours. Back at the lodge, as the sun peeked through for five glorious minutes, we fired up the BBQ (gas one, thank goodness—no faffing with charcoal), grilling sausages while the hot tub called us back.

That first evening, sat there with the family, steam curling up and laughter echoing, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Amid the splashes and near-mishaps—like when my other half nearly toppled off the decking chasing a rogue flip-flop—I realised this is what holidays are for: not grand adventures, but these simple pleasures. The lodge's warmth, the spa's hug, the gentle chaos of it all—it wrapped around us like a favourite jumper. Three days in Porthleven stretched ahead, but honestly, that arrival sealed it. If you're after relaxed family magic without the hassle, St Ives Lodge 3 Spa is your spot. Can't wait to return.
