About Porthleven
I finally made it to Porthleven after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Redruth – nothing major, just me taking a wrong turn onto some narrow lane that had me convinced I'd end up in a cow field. Picture this: me, sat-nav yelling at me like a disgruntled nan, and a rogue seagull dive-bombing the windscreen for crumbs I didn't even have. Classic me, turning a 20-minute hop into an unplanned scenic tour. But hey, by the time I pulled up to St Agnes, that little mishap had me chuckling, ready to ditch the rush.

St Agnes isn't some grand hotel; it's a proper cosy lodge tucked away in the heart of Porthleven, the kind of place that wraps you up like a favourite jumper. From the moment I parked on the gravel drive, gravel crunching under the tyres like a welcoming handshake, I knew this was spot on for my three-day escape. The owners had left the key in the door with a handwritten note – "Help yourself to eggs from the garden hens!" – which instantly melted any lingering travel stress. I hauled my bag inside, kicked off my trainers, and there it was: a sunlit living room with mismatched armchairs begging to be slumped in, and French doors opening straight onto a wild little garden.

First impressions? Pure bliss. The lodge smelled of fresh linen and sea air drifting in from the nearby harbour – you can't miss that salty tang in Porthleven. I dumped my stuff and made a beeline for the garden, a lush patch of ferns, lavender bushes, and those cheeky hens clucking about. No grand plans, mind; this trip was all about doing sod all, and St Agnes was built for it. I plonked myself in a rickety wooden chair with a cuppa from the well-stocked kitchen (proper builder's tea, none of that fancy leaf stuff), and just... sat. The garden's alive with butterflies flitting about, and in the distance, you hear the gentle whoosh of waves from Porthleven Beach, less than a mile away. It's that perfect Cornish hush that makes you forget emails exist.

Day one blurred into lazy heaven. After unpacking (which took all of five minutes), I cracked open a dog-eared paperback I'd brought – some light thriller that I barely concentrated on because the view kept pulling me away. The lodge's garden felt like my private nook, with a hammock strung between apple trees swaying in the breeze. I spent hours there, swinging gently, watching clouds scoot over the Lizard Peninsula hills. Light humour in the form of me trying to read aloud to the hens for company – they weren't impressed, one pecked my toe as if to say, "Pipe down, human, we're trying to nap." Made me proper laugh at myself.

Wandering out was effortless – no itinerary, just a slow amble down to Porthleven's harbour, where fishing boats bobbed and the air hummed with chippy smells from the quayside. I grabbed a pasty from a hole-in-the-wall spot (steak and proper buttery pastry, none of your supermarket rubbish), then mooched back via the sandy path to the beach. Feet in the cool Atlantic shallows, staring at the horizon where the sea meets sky – it's meditative stuff. Back at St Agnes, I lit the wood burner (even though it was mild out; cosiness first), cracked a local Helston beer, and sprawled on the sofa with more reading. No telly, no Wi-Fi nagging – just the tick of a clock and the odd gull cry.

That first evening, as the sun dipped low painting the garden gold, I had a proper moment of self-reflection. Sat there with my feet up, book forgotten, I realised how knackered I'd been from the daily grind. Porthleven and St Agnes had me slowing right down, reminding me that joy's in the nothing: no rush, no lists, just breathing in the calm. It's funny – I'd planned a holiday to recharge, but arriving here showed me I'd been running on empty without knowing. Three days of this? Absolute dream. Can't wait to do bugger all some more tomorrow.
