About Porthleven
I finally made it to Porthleven after a bit of a faff on the A30 – nothing major, just me spilling half my Costa flat white down my shirt five minutes from the turn-off, turning me into a walking caffeine advert. Proper daft, but it set the tone for what turned out to be the most gloriously slothful three days at Spa Retreat 2, this cracking little lodge tucked away in the breezy outskirts near Hayle, just a short hop from Porthleven's harbour charm.

Pulling up that first afternoon, I was knackered from the drive, but the sight of the place hit me like a warm hug. It's one of those proper cosy hideaways – think wooden cladding, a pitched roof with skylights begging for lazy stargazing, and a private hot tub bubbling away like it knew I needed it. The owners had left fresh scones and clotted cream on the kitchen counter (Cornwall, eh?), which I demolished while unpacking exactly three books, a bottle of decent gin, and bugger all else. No itinerary, no grand plans – just the joy of doing sweet FA.

First impressions? Blissfully unhurried. I flopped onto the massive corner sofa in the open-plan living area, feet up on the plush rug, and cracked open my battered copy of 'The Salt Path'. The floor-to-ceiling windows framed a lush garden that's more wilderness than manicure – wildflowers nodding in the sea breeze, a hammock slung between apple trees, and those distant glimpses of Porthleven's crashing waves on the horizon. It's not some sterile spa hotel; it's a lived-in lodge that whispers "stay put". I did, for hours, listening to the faint roar of the Atlantic while the wood-burner crackled (even in May, Cornwall keeps you on your toes with the chill).

Wandering out to the deck later, hot tub steaming under the weak sun, I sank in with a GandT and let the jets knead away the drive's kinks. Proper indulgent, that – bubbles fizzing around me like champagne, the garden alive with birdsong and the odd butterfly doing loops. No rush to move; I watched clouds scud over the Lizard Peninsula, feeling that rare luxury of time stretching out. Dinner was a faff-free affair: local pasties from the village shop (picked up on the way in – thick crust, chunky beef, none of your tourist tat), eaten picnic-style on the patio as the sun dipped low, painting the sky in that Cornish pinky-orange glow.

The next morning – day two already? – reinforced it all. No alarm, just birds and the spa's private sauna calling my name. I pottered about the garden paths, barefoot on dew-kissed grass, plonking myself in the hammock with a thermos of tea and more reading. It's daft how satisfying doing nothing feels when the setting's this good. A gentle amble down to Porthleven later (ten minutes' dawdle, tops) for a cream tea at a harbourside café – jam first, obviously – then back to base, feet up again, watching fishing boats bob in the swell. No hikes, no selfies, just lingering over the papers and letting the world slow to a crawl.

By day three's lazy lunch, sprawled on a lounger with a pasty wrapper flapping in the wind, I had one of those quiet moments: life's rush back home felt miles away, and honestly, who needs more than this? A steaming mug, a good book, and the simple rhythm of waves and wind. Spa Retreat 2 isn't about ticking boxes; it's a nudge to embrace the art of buggering about beautifully. If you're after proper downtime, book it – but pack a spare shirt.
