About Porthleven
Pulled up mid-afternoon on day one, knackered from the drive, and who’s the first to greet me? Old Reg, the harbour fisherman with a beard like a Brillo pad and hands like weathered driftwood. He was mending nets by his boat, the Mary Ellen, when I lugged my bags past. “New to Porthleven, eh? You look like you’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards!” he bellowed, eyes twinkling. I laughed, admitting the cow incident, and he roared. Turned out Reg’s been hauling lobster pots here since the war – or so he claims. Over a quick natter, he regaled me with tales of the 2014 storm that turned the harbour into a washing machine, waves smashing over the sea wall like God’s own tantrum. “Don’t you worry, lad,” he said, clapping my shoulder hard enough to jolt my fillings, “that hot tub of yours’ll sort any sea legs wobbles.” His gravelly laugh followed me up the path, and I thought, blimey, if this is the welcome, what a spot. Settled into Spa Retreat 1 – pristine little cottage, all exposed stone and that irresistible spa pool fizzing away on the private terrace overlooking the beach. First impressions? Bliss. But before I could even crack a beer, there was a knock at the door. Enter Dot, the village postie on her electric bike, delivering a misrouted parcel that wasn’t even mine. “Oops, meant for next door!” she chirped, peering past me with unabashed curiosity. Dot’s a proper character – late sixties, peroxide curls under her helmet, and a habit of solving everyone’s business before breakfast. We got chatting about the retreat; she’s known the owners forever. “Lovely spot, this. Used to be a smuggling den back in the day – perfect for hiding your pasties from the taxman!” She winked, handing over a pasty from her saddlebag as a “welcome gift,” still warm from Arthur’s bakery down the road. We stood there on the doorstep, me in my travel-rumpled clothes, her bike propped against the wall, swapping gossip about Porthleven’s annual sea shanty festival. “You’ll fit right in,” she said, “just don’t sing off-key like my Bert does.” That evening, as the sun dipped behind the cliffs, I dipped into the hot tub, bubbles massaging away the drive’s kinks. But the real magic was the parade of locals strolling by on the coastal path. First, young Jake, the surfer lad with sun-bleached hair and a board under his arm, who stopped for a wave and ended up perched on the terrace railing. “First time? Mate, you picked the best weather window – no gales today!” He’s 19, works the beach café, dreams of pro surfing but happy riding Porthleven’s waves. We bonded over my disastrous attempt at surfing years back (“I looked like a drowning octopus!”), and he shared how the village pulls together during swell season, everyone shouting tips from the shore. Proper genuine, that one. Then there was Mrs. Trevelyan – or Trevvy, as she insists – the retired teacher power-walking with her terrier, Percy. She clocked the steam from the hot tub and couldn’t resist. “Ooh, fancy! Mind if I let Percy have a sniff?” Before I knew it, she was regaling me with her theory on why Porthleven’s harbour wall is the best in Cornwall (“It’s the granite, dear – tougher than my late husband’s resolve”). Her stories of village fetes and the time Percy chased a seal into the shallows had me in stitches, water sloshing as I laughed. Lying back that night, stars popping overhead, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Amid the quirky chats and salty banter, I realised how rare it is to stumble into a place where strangers feel like mates from minute one. Porthleven and its folk – Reg’s yarns, Dot’s pasty, Jake’s grin, Trevvy’s wisdom – made my first hours at Spa Retreat 1 feel like coming home. Can’t wait to see what day two brings. |
