About Porthleven
Pulled up outside Perran mid-afternoon, the sea air hitting me like a salty slap, and there was Madge from next door, peering over her garden wall with binoculars. "You the London lot?" she bellowed, before I'd even turned off the engine. Turned out she wasn't spying – well, not just spying – but spotting seals out on the rocks. "Better than telly," she grinned, thrusting a mug of tea into my hand. Madge is Porthleven's self-appointed harbour watch, retired fisherman’s wife with stories longer than the beach at low tide. Over that brew, she regaled me with tales of the time a pod of dolphins chased her husband's boat right into the harbour mouth back in '89. "Nearly ended up in the chippy!" she cackled. I was knackered from the drive, but her energy was infectious – proper character, that one. Inside Perran, it was all cosy beams and sea views from the lounge window, but no time to unpack before the village reeled me in. Wandered down to the harbour, past the fishing boats bobbing like they'd had one too many, and bumped into Tommy at the quayside. He's the lobster potter with a beard like a Brillo pad and a dog called Smuggler who nicks pasties from tourists. "First time in Por'leven?" he asked, coiling rope like it was spaghetti. I nodded, and off he went: "Right, listen 'ere. That cottage of yours? Used to belong to old Captain Jago, who reckoned he saw the ghost of a mermaid in the full moon." Tommy's eyes twinkled as he spun yarns about wreckers luring ships onto the rocks with lanterns – all bollocks, probably, but delivered with such deadpan flair I was hooked. We chatted for an hour about the best spot for bass fishing (he's against it for newcomers, "too many hooks lost to the devil's teeth"), and Smuggler eyed my trainers the whole time like they were supper. Evening rolled in, and I nipped to the Harbour Inn for a pint – couldn't resist after Tommy's nudge. Behind the bar was Lena, the landlady with tattoos from her surfing days and a laugh that rattled the pumps. "Perran, eh? Madge's been on about you already," she winked, pulling a perfect Doom Bar. Lena's the glue of the place, knows everyone's secrets but keeps 'em closer than her winnings from the pub quiz. She introduced me to Big Dave, a local builder nursing a cider, who claimed he'd once arm-wrestled a seal (lost, obviously). "Porthleven folk are like that," Lena said, "tight as a drum but mad as a box of frogs." We swapped stories – her about the storm of '15 that flooded the street up to the pub door, him about coaching the village kids' footy team with a ball made from an old wellie. Proper chinwag, laced with that gentle piss-taking you only get in proper pubs. Sitting there, pint in hand, watching the sun dip behind the Lizard, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Back home, life's all rush and screens, but here in Porthleven, it's these characters that make a place sing. Madge's binoculars, Tommy's tall tales, Lena's warmth – they wrapped around you like a sea mist, reminding me why I needed this break. Not the views or the cottage (though Perran's spot-on), but the people, quirky as a crab with a limp. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. Can't wait to see what day two brings. |
