About Porthleven
I finally made it to Oak Lodge in Porthleven after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Falmouth. Picture this: I'm trundling along those narrow Cornish lanes, windows down, radio blasting some cracking indie tunes, when – splat! – a rogue seagull decides to redecorate my windscreen with what looked suspiciously like last night's chip supper. I pull over near the harbour, muttering under my breath, and give it a half-hearted wipe with a service station napkin. Laughable, really, but it set the tone for the weekend: nothing too serious, just enough to make you chuckle and carry on.

Pulling up to Oak Lodge felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. Tucked away in a quiet spot on the edge of Porthleven, it's one of those proper cosy cottages – stone walls, a thatched roof that screams "traditional Cornwall", and a garden that backs right onto breezy fields with glimpses of the sea. I parked up, hauled my overstuffed weekend bag inside (why do I always pack like I'm off to the Arctic?), and there it was: the living room with its inglenook fireplace, squishy sofas piled high with cushions, and a telly that I knew I'd barely glance at. First impressions? Blissful. No frantic itinerary, no alarm clocks – just the joy of doing sod all, and loving every minute.

Day one was all about settling in and letting the world slow to a crawl. I dumped my stuff, brewed a massive mug of tea (builder's strength, naturally), and flopped into the garden with a dog-eared paperback I'd been meaning to crack open for months. The sun was doing its best impression of summer, filtering through the apple trees, and there was this hammock swaying gently that practically begged to be tested. I spent hours there, rocking back and forth, half-reading, half-dozing, listening to the distant crash of waves from Porthleven's beach. It's funny how, back home, my brain's always buzzing like a dodgy fridge – to-do lists, emails, the lot. Here, though? It was like someone hit the pause button. A gentle nudge to myself: mate, you needed this more than you realised.

Wandering out for a mooch around the village was effortless – no more than a ten-minute stroll to the harbour, where fishing boats bobbed lazily and the air smelled of salt and fresh pasties. I grabbed one from a little shack by the water's edge – cheese and onion, steaming hot, the works – and perched on a bench watching the surfers paddle out. Porthleven's got that perfect laid-back vibe: quirky beach huts, a smattering of arty shops selling driftwood sculptures and local gin, but nothing pushing you to rush. I pottered along the sandy stretch of beach, toes in the cool Atlantic shallows, picking up the odd bit of seaweed like a proper tourist. Back at the lodge by early afternoon, I lit the wood burner (even though it wasn't that chilly – pure indulgence), cracked open a cold cider, and sprawled on the sofa with the book again. Dinner? A simple fry-up of local sausages and eggs, rustled up in the compact kitchen while the sun dipped low over the garden.

By evening, as the light faded and stars popped out like someone had flicked a switch, I was properly hooked on this do-nothing rhythm. No grand adventures, no Instagram frenzy – just the simple pleasure of a cosy nook, a good read, and the faint hum of the sea. That first day melted away any lingering stresses, leaving me with a quiet grin and a promise to myself: slow down more often, you daft sod. Oak Lodge had worked its magic already, and we'd only just begun.
