About Porthleven
I finally made it to Porthleven after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Helston—nothing major, just me spilling my flask of tea all over the passenger seat about five minutes from the Marconi Premier Lodge. Typical me, innit? Arms flailing like a windmill, swearing under my breath while the A394 twisted through those lush Cornish valleys. But as I pulled up to the lodge that afternoon, mopping up the mess with a soggy tissue, the first sight of it cheered me right up. Tucked neatly in a peaceful spot just a short stroll from the village centre, this cosy little haven looked like it had been plucked straight from a postcard—whitewashed walls, a pitched roof, and a cheeky little patio begging for a cuppa.

The sun was peeking through patchy clouds as I unloaded my bags, the sea air already whipping up that salty tang that screams Cornwall. Check-in was a doddle; the hosts had left the key in a handy lockbox, with a warm note welcoming me to their Premier Lodge. Stepping inside, it was all homely charm: a compact open-plan living area with a squishy sofa facing a wood burner (not needed yet, mind), a neat kitchenette stocked with tea, coffee, and even some fresh milk in the fridge. Upstairs, the bedroom was snug as a bug, with crisp white sheets and views out to the rolling fields. First impressions? Spot on for a solo three-day jaunt—everything you need without the faff of a massive hotel.

Eager to shake off the drive, I laced up my boots for a wander into Porthleven proper. It's barely a ten-minute clip along a leafy lane, past the odd granite cottage and the hum of the odd tractor. The village harbour was buzzing when I arrived: fishing boats bobbing in the swell, lobster pots stacked high, and that iconic inner harbour wall curving out like a protective arm. The weather was playing nice—bright blue skies, a gentle breeze—so I nipped into the beach café for a cream tea (jam first, obviously) and plotted my first hike. Porthleven's got this brilliant stretch of the South West Coast Path right on its doorstep, so I figured I'd tackle the clifftop stroll towards Loe Bar, that massive shingle spit about a couple of miles west.

Off I went, striding out along the path with the Atlantic crashing below. The views were proper stunning—rugged cliffs plunging into turquoise waves, gulls wheeling overhead, and wildflowers nodding in the wind. Felt like I'd stepped into a David Attenborough doc. But oh, British weather, you fickle friend. Halfway along, the clouds rolled in thick as clag, and suddenly it was lashing down with that fine, persistent drizzle that soaks you to the bone before you realise. I hunkered under my cagoule, laughing at myself as puddles formed in my boots. Plan A—picnic at Loe Bar with a view of the lagoon—scrapped. Instead, I looped back towards the harbour, the rain turning the path into a slippery adventure. Dodging cow pats and squelching through mud, I felt a right numpty, but there was something brilliant about it. That raw, elemental Cornish vibe, where the weather keeps you on your toes.

By the time I squelched back to the lodge, the sun was breaking through again, turning the wet fields into a sparkly wonderland. I brewed a pot of tea, kicked off my boots, and sprawled on the sofa, watching the light shift over the harbour in the distance. First day in, and already the Marconi Premier Lodge felt like my little Cornish bolthole—perfect for drying off, reflecting on how I need to pack better waterproofs next time (self-note: stop being a fair-weather walker). The changing skies had forced a rethink, but honestly, it made the simple joy of a rainy hike and a warm welcome all the sweeter. Can't wait to see what the weather throws at me tomorrow.
