About Porthleven
I finally made it to Porthleven after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Truro – nothing major, just a rogue seagull deciding my windscreen needed a fresh coat of paint right as I hit the narrow lanes into town. Swerved like a pro, heart racing, but hey, that's Cornwall for you: wildlife with attitude.

Pulled up outside Lloyd just as the afternoon sun was peeking through the clouds, that classic Cornish light that makes everything look like a postcard. It's this cosy little fisherman's cottage tucked away on the edge of Porthleven, right by the harbour – whitewashed walls, slate roof, the works. I lugged my bag up the steps, unlocked the door, and stepped into pure charm: low-beamed ceilings, a wood-burner begging for a fire, and a kitchen that screamed "whip up a pasty here." First impressions? Spot on. It felt like slipping into an old friend's hug – lived-in, welcoming, with sea views from the upstairs bedroom that had me grinning like an idiot.

Day one, I was buzzing to explore on foot. Weather app promised blue skies, so I laced up my boots and headed out for a stroll around the harbour. Porthleven's inner harbour is magic – fishing boats bobbing, the scent of salt and chip shops in the air. I wandered past the RNLI station, waving at locals sorting crab pots, then cut up towards the cliffs for what I figured would be a breezy clifftop hike. The path winds along the South West Coast Path, with epic views over Loe Bar – that massive shingle beach holding back the lake. Wind whipping my hair, gulls screeching overhead; I felt alive, snapping pics of the waves crashing below.

But oh, British weather – the great leveller. By lunchtime, the sky turned moody, fat raindrops plopping down like it had a personal grudge. Plans for a full afternoon tramp to Rinsey Head? Scrubbed. I dashed back to Lloyd, laughing at myself as I squelched through puddles, dripping on the doormat. Cosied up by the window with a cuppa, watching the storm roll in over the harbour. It's funny how you pack for every eventuality – waterproofs, thermals, the lot – but nothing preps you for that sudden shift from sun worshipper to sofa surfer. Still, it was brilliant: the cottage's thick walls kept the chill out, and I munched on a takeaway pasty from the Harbour Inn, feeling smug about my backup plan.

Next morning, optimism renewed. Grey but dry, so off I went again, this time hugging the coast towards Porthleven Beach. The sand's vast, dunes rolling back to the cliffs, and with the tide out, it's perfect for a proper yomp. I followed the path up to the headland, dodging sheep and mud, the sea a churning grey beast below. Halfway up, the heavens opened – proper horizontal rain this time. Cue me, hood up, power-walking back like a drowned rat, giggling at the absurdity. "Typical," I muttered, thinking of all those holidays ruined by worse. Slipped into Lloyd soaked to the skin, brewed a stormer of a tea, and parked myself by the fire (logs provided, thank goodness).

That evening, as the rain eased to drizzle, I nipped out for a short loop around the village – past the tidal harbour gates closing up, streetlights flickering on. First impressions of Porthleven? A hiker's dream wrapped in weather roulette. Lloyd was the perfect base: steps from the action, snug when the elements turned feral. Made me reflect a bit, trudging back – life's like these Cornish paths, innit? Full of sudden squalls that force you to adapt, but all the richer for it. Can't wait to return when the sun sticks around longer.
