About Porthleven
I finally rolled into Porthleven after a bit of a faff on the A30, my ancient estate car groaning under the weight of cool boxes, beach toys, and enough crisps to siege a castle. We'd set off from home at the crack of dawn—or what passes for it in Cornwall's perpetual mist—but about five miles out, disaster struck in the form of a rogue seagull that dive-bombed straight into the windscreen. Splat! Feathers everywhere, kids in the back screaming with laughter while I pulled over, heart thumping, convinced I'd orphaned a flock. Turns out the bird shook it off and flapped away, leaving me with a smeary windscreen and a story to tell. Classic start to a family holiday, eh?

By early afternoon, we were trundling down the narrow lanes towards Hooper's Lodge in nearby Crowlas, the satnav's cheerful voice cutting through the kids' chants for "ice cream now!" The lodge peeked out from behind a hedge like a cosy hug from the Cornish countryside—low-slung, thatched roof nodding in the breeze, surrounded by rolling fields dotted with woolly sheep eyeing us suspiciously. It's one of those proper rural boltholes, just a quick hop from Porthleven's harbour but worlds away from the hustle. As we crunched up the gravel drive, my other half let out a proper sigh of relief. "This is it," she said. "Proper getaway vibes."

Pushing open the sturdy wooden door, we were hit with that instant holiday whiff—woodsmoke from the log burner, a hint of sea salt clinging to everything, and the faint tang of past fry-ups in the kitchen. The place is compact but clever, all beams and quirky corners that scream "lodge life." The living room's got this massive squishy sofa facing a wood-burning stove that's begging for a chilly evening in, shelves groaning under board games and dog-eared paperbacks. Kitchen's a dream for lazy cooks like me: Aga humming away, stocked with basics (cheers for the welcome milk and biscuits), and a window overlooking the garden where chickens were pecking about like they owned the joint.

The kids bolted upstairs first, claiming the bunk beds in their room with shrieks of joy—my eldest son immediately testing the top bunk's "bounciness" with a wobble that had us all holding our breath. Our room was pure bliss: a king-sized bed piled high with fluffy duvets, views across the fields to the distant shimmer of Mount's Bay. I flopped down for a sec, staring at the ceiling beams, and had one of those daft moments of self-reflection. Here I was, mid-forties, chasing deadlines back home, yet plonked in this idyll with nothing but family chaos and cream teas on the agenda. Bloody marvellous, I thought. Why do we ever leave?

First impressions? Spot on for a relaxed family break. We unpacked amid minor pandemonium—the youngest upending a bag of shells from last year's trip, sand everywhere—and within minutes, were raiding the fridge for brews and snacks. Stepping out into the garden felt like unwrapping a present: picnic benches under apple trees, a fire pit for toasting marshmallows later, and those cheeky chickens clucking for scraps. It's got that gentle chaos baked in—gates to keep the hens out (mostly), wildflowers spilling over the paths, and just enough space for the kids to run amok without vanishing into Narnia.

By teatime, we'd wandered the five-minute stroll to Porthleven, grabbing fish and chips from the harbourside van—the batter crisp as a Cornish summer, wrapped in paper that steamed up the car windows on the way back. Sat in the lodge garden as the sun dipped, munching away with sandy feet and sticky fingers, waves crashing faintly in the distance. No grand plans, just this: simple pleasures like the first sip of tea from a chipped mug, the kids' giggles echoing off the walls, and that lodge-y feeling of being properly unplugged. If the rest of our three days matches this arrival, we'll be chuffed to bits. Can't wait to wake up to it all tomorrow.
