About Porthleven
I finally made it to Porthleven after what felt like the world's most faffing-about drive from Redruth, my little hatchback groaning under the weight of weekend bags and a cool box that was already leaking slightly. It was one of those classic Cornish journeys where the satnav decides to play silly buggers – directing me down a narrow lane that dead-ended at a field full of suspiciously curious cows. I reversed out with all the grace of a drunk hedgehog, swearing under my breath as a splodge of mud flicked up onto the windscreen. Typical me, turning a 20-minute hop into a 45-minute comedy of errors. But as I crested the hill into Porthleven proper, the sea sparkling under a patchy blue sky, I couldn't help but grin. This was it – Hendra, my cosy bolt-hole for three blissful days.

Pulling up outside the cottage, I was knackered but buzzing. Hendra sits tucked away in that sweet spot on the edge of the village, just a stone's throw from the bustling harbour yet quiet enough to hear the waves crashing. It's one of those classic Cornish stone cottages, all whitewashed walls and a slate roof that looks like it's been there since smuggling was a legit career choice. The front garden was a riot of hydrangeas still clinging to their late-summer pinks and blues, buzzing with bees – proper postcard stuff. I fumbled the key from the lockbox (after a minor panic thinking I'd left it in Truro), and stepped inside, hit by that glorious rush of holiday home scent: fresh linen, a hint of woodsmoke, and maybe a whiff of past guests' pasties.

The living room was an absolute dream – beamed ceiling, a squishy L-shaped sofa piled with cushions that screamed "flop here with a cuppa", and a wood burner ready for chillier evenings (though we were blessed with sun). French doors opened straight onto a private patio, overlooking a sliver of the sea – I tell you, that view hit me like a tonic. Dropped my bags and cracked open the cool box (hello, mishap number two: the prosecco had gone a bit fizzy-flat from the earlier drama). Poured a glass anyway and wandered through. The kitchen was kitted out proper – granite worktops, a Rayburn cooker that looked like it could rustle up a Sunday roast for eight, and all the gadgets you'd need for a self-catering stint. I chuckled to myself, imagining the state it'd be in by day's end after my legendary burnt-toast skills.

Upstairs, the bedrooms were pure snug heaven. Our double had a superking bed draped in crisp white cotton, with windows framing the rooftops and a glimpse of the harbour mouth where fishing boats bobbed like corks. The en-suite was compact but spotless, power shower pummelling away the drive's grime in seconds. The twin room next door was perfect for mates or kids, with that same sea-peek view. I stood there for a mo, bags unpacked half-heartedly, and had one of those gentle "what am I doing with my life?" moments. Back home, it's all emails and deadlines; here, in this unassuming little Hendra, everything slowed. The cows, the mud, the leaky cool box – it all felt like the universe's way of saying, "Slow down, you daft sod."

Stepping out for that first proper explore, Porthleven wrapped around me like a warm jumper. A five-minute wander down to the harbour, past the RNLI station and the sandy curve of the beach, where surfers were already paddling out on decent waves. Grabbed a coffee from a beach hut shack – strong, milky, just how we Brits like it – and watched the fishing boats unload their catch. The air was salty-thick, laced with chips from the harbourside takeaways. Back at Hendra by lunchtime, I fired up the BBQ on the patio (gas, thank goodness – no faffing with charcoal after my arrival antics). Sizzled some local sausages pinched from the village shop, feet up, sea breeze ruffling the tablecloth. First impressions? Chaos on arrival, but pure magic settling in. This place isn't just a holiday let; it's a proper tonic for the soul. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, but right now, I'm sorted.
