About Porthleven
I finally made it to Porthleven after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Helston—nothing major, just me spilling my flask of tea all over the passenger seat five minutes from the turn-off, leaving a soggy map and a whiff of Earl Grey that lingered for the rest of the journey. Laughable, really, but it set the tone for what turned out to be the perfect three-day escape at Harbour Premier Lodge: a chance to do bugger all and love every minute of it.

Pulling up to the lodge that first afternoon, I was chuffed to bits. Tucked right on the edge of Porthleven's harbour, it's one of those cosy stone-built spots that screams "Cornish idyll" without trying too hard. The Premier Lodge lives up to its name—spacious inside, with big windows framing the bobbing fishing boats and the restless sea beyond. I dumped my bags, kicked off my trainers, and just stood there soaking it in. No rush, no itinerary. This was about switching off, proper slowing down.

First impressions? Blissfully unhurried. The garden out back is a gem—overgrown in that wild, seaside way, with a couple of weathered benches and pots of hardy hydrangeas nodding in the breeze. I plonked myself down with a cuppa from the well-stocked kitchen (milk in the fridge, teabags galore—sorted) and watched the gulls squabble over scraps from the nearby quay. It's funny how, in the rush of everyday life back home, you forget how good it feels to just sit. No scrolling, no emails, just the lap of waves and the odd fishing boat chugging out for lobster pots.

That evening, I ambled down to the harbour—no more than a two-minute stroll—and treated myself to fish and chips from the Koffiji Hut, wrapped in paper and eaten on a harbour wall bench as the sun dipped low. Crispy batter, proper mushy peas, the works. Sat there with the salty air whipping about, legs dangling over the edge, feeling like a kid again. Porthleven's inner harbour is magic at dusk; the boats silhouetted against the Lizard Peninsula, lights flickering on in the cluster of whitewashed cottages. I chuckled to myself thinking how I'd planned grand walks along the coastal path, but nah, this lazy perch was spot on.

Day two dawned misty, perfect for more of the same. Brekkie in the lodge's sunny nook—porridge with local honey I'd nipped out for from the village shop—then straight back to the garden with a dog-eared paperback. The lodge has this cracking outdoor space shielded from the wind, ideal for reading while the world ticks on without you. I must've nodded off for an hour under the parasol, waking to the sound of a foghorn. Hilarious, really—me, the eternal fidgeter, dozing like a contented cat. A gentle wander later took me along the harbour arm to watch the surf dudes tackling the break at the harbour mouth. Porthleven's got that rep for big waves, but I was content spectating, thermos in hand, before looping back for a nap on the sofa.

By day three, I'd fully embraced the joy of doing very little. Lounged in the lodge's comfy lounge with its wood-burner (unlit, but cosy nonetheless), flipping through magazines and listening to the radio hum of BBC Cornwall. Popped out for a pasty from the local bakery—proper Cornish, stuffed with steak and swede—eaten picnic-style in the garden. Reflected there, mid-bite, on how rare it is to let go. Back home, I'm always chasing the next thing; here, time stretched like toffee. The lodge wrapped me in that warm, unpretentious hug—harbour views from every angle, birdsong in the garden, and zero pressure.

Leaving felt bittersweet, but those first impressions linger: Harbour Premier Lodge is the antidote to hurry-up life. If you're after lazy days in Porthleven, slowing right down amid boats and breezes, this is your spot. Can't wait to spill less tea next time.
