About Porthleven
Nestled in that sweet spot between Porthleven's bustling harbour and the wild Gwithian Towans, Gwithian Premier Lodge hit us like a warm hug the second we stepped through the gate. It's one of those cracking Premier Lodges from Snaptrip—hot tub bubbling away on the private deck, fairy lights twinkling as dusk crept in, and a view that stretched out to the Atlantic crashing against the beach. No five-star fuss, just pure, unpretentious lodge life. We dumped our bags in the lounge, all plush sofas and a wood burner begging for a log or two, and Finn bolted straight for the games basket. "Dad, there's Jenga! And Uno!" he yelled, already plotting his world domination. First impressions? Blissfully spot-on for a family unwind. The kitchen was a dream—shiny hob, massive fridge stocked with our own milk and butter from the welcome pack, and enough worktop space to rustle up fish and chips without elbowing anyone. Sarah cracked open a bottle of local Sharps Doom Bar while I fiddled with the smart TV, firing up a playlist of sea shanties for that authentic vibe. But let's be real, the real star was that hot tub. We piled in as the sun dipped behind the cliffs, Finn splashing like a demented seal pup, Sarah sighing "this is the life," and me pondering how I'd let work emails ruin my last holiday. Gentle nudge to self: life's too short for spreadsheets when you've got bubbles and brews. Saturday morning dawned with that classic Cornish mist rolling in off the sea, and we wandered the five-minute stroll into Porthleven proper. The harbour was buzzing—fishermen unloading the catch, the air thick with salty promise. We grabbed pasties from the local bakery, flaky pastry perfection stuffed with steak and spuds, and scoffed them on the harbour wall while watching surfers tackle the waves at the beach. Finn chased seagulls, nearly toppling into the harbour in his excitement, and I had one of those dad moments: "Oi, shipmate, mind the edge!" Light chaos, pure joy. Back at the lodge by noon, we fired up the BBQ on the deck—nothing fancy, just sausages from the village butcher and a cheeky salad—while the hot tub called us back for round two. Sarah and I sneaked a quiet soak later, Finn conked out on the sofa with a cartoon, and we chatted about how this spot nails that relaxed family break. No schedules, no screens (well, mostly), just the simple pleasures of lodge life: crackling fire, crashing waves, and the odd rogue crisp still lurking under the car seats. By Sunday, as we packed up with sandy toes and sun-kissed noses, Gwithian had wormed its way into our hearts. That insignificant crisp mishap on arrival felt like a lifetime ago—replaced by hot tub zen, harbour giggles, and a family vibe that's hard to beat. Porthleven's got that magic: close enough for pasty runs, far enough for total chill. If you're after a three-day reset with a side of lodge luxury and a sprinkle of kiddo mayhem, this is your spot. We're already plotting a return. |
