About Porthleven
I finally rolled into Porthleven after a cheeky detour that had me swearing at my satnav like it was my ex. I'd taken a wrong turn somewhere near Helston – nothing major, just ended up looping past a field of cows that looked as baffled as I felt – but by the time I pulled up to Argel Spa, the late afternoon sun was glinting off the sea, and all was forgiven. This little gem of a cottage, tucked right on the edge of the village with its own private hot tub gazing out over the harbour, felt like the perfect hideaway for my three-day jaunt. Stone floors, a cosy wood burner, and that spa setup begging for a unwind – first impressions? Bloody spot on.

No sooner had I lugging my bag through the door than I spotted my first character: old Reg, the fisherman type who lives a stone's throw away. He was ambling past with his dog, a scruffy terrier called Bazza that yapped like it owned the harbour wall. "New 'ere, are ya?" he bellowed, eyeing my hire car like it was a spaceship. I nodded, still fumbling with the key code, and he launched into a yarn about the last storm that nearly swept his boat into Prussia Cove. "Mind the hot tub, lad," he winked, "tourists fall in backwards and come out pickled like pilchards." I chuckled, picturing it – me, bobbing like a cork with a pint in hand. Reg's got that proper Cornish twang, all gravel and salt, and within five minutes he'd invited me for a "proper" pasty from the local bakery round the corner. First impression of Porthleven locals? Warm as toast, with stories that could fill a book.

Settling in, I cracked open the bifold doors to the deck – the hot tub was steaming invitingly, harbour views stretching out to the breakers – and that's when Jenny from the beach café next door popped her head over the fence. She's the queen of crab sandwiches, apparently, with a laugh that echoes like a foghorn. "Fancy a cuppa, love? Can't have you starving on your first go!" Before I knew it, I was perched on her garden bench, sipping builder's tea strong enough to strip paint, while she regaled me with tales of the surfing lads who treat her café like a second home. "That one there," she nodded at a bronzed bloke paddling out on his board, "that's Trelawny. Fell off more waves than he's caught, but he makes the best playlists for the pub quiz." Her eyes twinkled with mischief as she confessed to spiking the losers' pints with extra vinegar. Proper character, Jenny – made me feel like I'd known her for years, not minutes.

Wandering down to the harbour for a mooch, I bumped into eccentric Mike, the artist bloke with paint-splattered wellies and a beard that could hide a pasty. He's always sketching the Bickford Smith Tower or the lifeboat house, muttering about "the light, man, the light!" We got chatting over the slipway, him waving his brush like a conductor. "Argel Spa, eh? Prime spot for watching the seals sunbathe. Saw one last week nicking chips off a kiddie – bold as brass!" His enthusiasm was infectious; he even dragged me to the ice cream van for a 99, insisting the flake had to be "proper Cadbury, none of your Belgian rubbish." Mike's the sort who turns a five-minute chat into a philosophy lesson on why Porthleven's waves are "soul food."

As the sun dipped, bubbling in the hot tub with a cold cider, I reflected gently on how these quirky souls – Reg's gruff wisdom, Jenny's bubbly chaos, Mike's wild-eyed passion – turned arrival into something magical. In a world of rushed hellos, Porthleven's locals make you linger, hot tub or no. First impressions don't get much better.
