About Porthleven
Porthleven itself is a proper gem, that crescent of harbour hugging the Atlantic like it's never letting go. I parked up near the cottage – it's one of those tucked-away spots in the village heart, a stone's throw from the sandy beach and the inner harbour where fishing boats bob about like they've got all day. Almond Cottage? Blimey, from the off, it felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. I fumbled the key code (post-gull panic, my hands were shaking), but once inside, it was all beams and charm. Low ceilings with those wonky wooden ones that make you duck instinctively, a cosy lounge with a wood burner begging for a fire (though it was mild enough for just a jumper), and a kitchen that screamed "whip up a fry-up here." I dumped my bags and just stood there, grinning like an idiot at the views – big sash windows framing the harbour, where surfers were already paddling out on waves that looked positively inviting. First impressions? Instant love. I cracked open a cuppa from the welcome pack – proper tea leaves, none of your bag rubbish – and wandered out to the patio. It's got this little private terrace overlooking the water, perfect for watching the world go by. A couple of locals were strolling the quay, dogs splashing in the shallows, and the air smelled of salt and chip shops firing up for lunch. I chuckled to myself, thinking how I'd nearly binned the whole trip after that windscreen debacle. "What a plonker," I muttered, wiping the last smudge off my phone camera as I snapped pics of the scene. The cottage is spot on for a solo wanderer like me – compact but comfy, with a super-king bed upstairs that looked like it could swallow you whole (tested it with a five-minute flop, naturally). Downstairs loo was pristine, and those little touches like fluffy towels and a shelf of board games made it feel lived-in, not sterile. Venturing out proper, I ambled down to the beach – Porthleven Sands, all golden and wide, with the harbour wall curving protectively round it. Waves crashing in, a few brave souls kiting in the breeze, and the iconic Loe Bar stretching off into the distance. I grabbed a coffee from a beachside hut, the kind where the barista knows your order by day two, and sat on the pebbles, feet dangling towards the foam. The mishap from earlier? Forgotten already. But here's a quiet moment amid the bliss: staring at that endless sea, I realised how knackered I'd been lately – work piling up, life in autopilot. This cottage, this village, it was like a reset button. No grand plans needed; just arriving here felt like enough. By tea time, I'd nipped to the harbour for fresh crab from one of the boats – £8 for a pot that tasted of the ocean itself – and eaten it on the terrace as the sun dipped, painting the water pink. Almond Cottage wrapped it all up perfectly: chaotic start, but first impressions that hooked me solid. If you're after that proper Cornish welcome, without the faff of far-flung spots, this is your bolthole. Can't wait to go back – minus the seagull, mind. |
