About Adelaide.
Portreath's sheltered harbour made it a bustling tin-exporting port in the 1800s. Today, its wild coastline, high cliffs, secluded coves and sandy surf beaches draw visitors worldwide. Reminders of its industrial heritage abound. Enjoy the fishing harbour, shops, pubs, three cafés and a Chinese restaurant. The safe sandy beach is a hit. Nearby, Truro's cathedral city (14 miles) offers cobbled streets, shopping, theatre, museum and restaurants. Follow the vast sandy beach to Hayle and St Ives. A delightful holiday spot. About Porthleven
Pulling up to the cottage just off the main drag, I was chuffed to bits. Porthleven's that perfect pocket of Cornwall – all salty sea air and fishing boats bobbing in the harbour, without the crowds of St Ives. Adelaide sits tucked away enough to feel private, but you're a two-minute wander from the beach and those cracking seafood shacks. It's a proper little lodge-style place, whitewashed walls glowing in the afternoon sun, with a cheeky conservatory out back that screamed "afternoon GandT spot". We tumbled out of the car, kids already eyeing the garden like it was Narnia, and I fumbled the keys from the lockbox like a pro (first try, miracle). Stepping inside was pure hygge – or whatever the Cornish equivalent is. The living room's got this lived-in charm, with a wood burner that's begging for a chilly evening (fingers crossed for later), squashy sofas that swallowed us whole, and a telly bigger than our lounge at home. Kitchen's kitted out smartly too – Aga vibes without the faff, and a table big enough for our ragtag family spread. The kids bolted upstairs to claim beds, yelling about bunk beds and sea views. Ours was the master with an en-suite that felt like a treat – powerful shower, fluffy towels, the works. I caught myself in the mirror, windswept and grinning like an idiot. When did I last feel this unplugged? First impressions? Blissfully chaotic in the best way. We dumped bags and headed straight out for a mooch around the harbour – it's literally on the doorstep. Fishermen were hauling in the catch, gulls squawking overhead, and the scent of fresh crab from the boats had us salivating. Popped into a tiny café for pasties (proper ones, flaky and steaming), and sat on the sea wall watching surfers tackle the waves. Porthleven Beach is a stunner, all golden sand and breakers – perfect for a post-lunch paddle. The little ones built wonky sandcastles while I skimmed stones, feeling about ten years old myself. Light humour kicked in when a wave snuck up and soaked my trainers – "Welcome to Cornwall, mate," laughed my wife, handing me a soggy pasty wrapper. Back at Adelaide by tea time, we cracked open a bottle of local cider (picked up from the village shop – friendly chap behind the counter recommended it). That conservatory? Magic hour gold. Sun dipping low over the rooftops, us sprawled out with cheeseboard remnants (grater schmeter, we improvised with a fork). Kids caused minor lodge life pandemonium – one tipped a plant pot, scattering soil like confetti, and we all ended up giggling on the floor hoovering it up with the handheld. It's those simple pleasures that hit home: no schedules, just family messing about together. As the evening light faded, I had a quiet moment on the doorstep, sipping tea and listening to the distant waves crash. Work stress? Miles away. Here in Porthleven, at Adelaide, it's all about breathing deep and letting the sea sort your soul. Three days in, and we're already dreading the unpack at home. If you're after relaxed family vibes with a dash of Cornish chaos, this is your spot. Can't recommend it enough. |
